Redskins Insider by Jason Reid

Veteran Washington Redskins offensive lineman Mike Williams, who overcame weight problems to become a valuable member of the unit in his first season with the team, is expected to miss the 2010 season because of blood clots near his heart, two people familiar with the situation said late Friday night.

Williams, projected to compete for a starting spot at right guard, was hospitalized recently because the problem, the team sources said. Although Williams has been released from the hospital, the organization is concerned that his condition could be career-threatening and likely will keep him off the field for at least the upcoming season, which gets underway July 29 when the team begins its first training camp under Coach Mike Shanahan.

Williams did not immediately return a text message to his cellphone Friday night. Speaking on behalf of the organization, Tony Wyllie, Redskins senior vice president, declined to comment on Williams's medical status.

This is a blow to rebuilding the OL. Just pray he has a long term recovery. Good luck Big Mike.

That's unfortunate, obviously on several fronts. Wonder if maybe he's got atrial fibrillation issues - that's the most common cause of clots when they are found in or near the chambers of the heart.

Better they were found now by far.

I don't know how significant a 'blow' to the O-Line this will be. Williams was nothing more than a project/placeholder last year. Whether this would be the year where he'd return to true NFL starter form, and reach some of his potential having shed the weight and being much fitter, was certainly a question mark, not a foregone conclusion.

Praying for the Big Man to make a full and complete recovery.
