What stops the Chinese from eating Pandas ?

I just realized how ironic it is, the way a country like China goes out of their way, to preserve the Panda species, considering how they seem to have absolutely no limits on what animals they eat. The stuff they're known to eat actually sickens me, i.e. monkey brains WHILE THEY'RE ALIVE.
So what causes them to draw the line at Pandas ? Especially considering how heavily populated they are, there'd be more likelihood of more crazies, eating up the Pandas ?
