Well, yes, the Commanders were interested in Von Miller.
You see, a couple of days ago Miller's agent, Joey Brandon, felt so good for his client that Brandon proclaimed to the NFL public that three NFL teams were interested in the defensive end who was an unrestricted free agent.
Proclaiming it to the NFL public raised questions about whether there were actually teams interested in Miller. One interpretation of Brandon's announcement was that Brandon was actually attempting to generate interest in his client. However, late Wednesday evening, Adam Schefter surprised NFL followers by announcing that Von Miller is signing with the Commanders. Of course, Miller had the news first, posting a photo on his Instagram account, and Schefter confirmed.
Even more than Terry McLaurin's contract extension negotiations, the most talked-about subject for the Commanders this offseason has been their need for a pass rusher. GM Adam Peters felt there were good players at other positions to be selected when they were on the clock during the 2025 NFL draft, choosing not to reach for a pass rusher in any of his five draft choices.
Now 36, Miller has collected 129.5 career sacks, forcing 27 fumbles. What role remains for Miller? Seeing that no team had yet signed him, it appears the role of situational pass rusher is what remains for Miller, as it seems he has decided to put on the pads for a 14th NFL season.
The Commanders do play a four-man front scheme, which will fit the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Miller. He is still the last defensive player to win a Super Bowl MVP, having achieved the honor for his dominant performance in Super Bowl 50, as the Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers. One can easily realize now that Peters has been busy these last few weeks addressing the need for a pass rusher to be added to the roster. Most likely, Peters hopes to utilize Miller on passing downs to enhance their pass rush.
In 13 games as a Buffalo Bill in 2024, Miller achieved six sacks. In seven NFL seasons, Miller accumulated double-digit sack totals. Miller spent ten seasons with the Broncos (2011-2019, 2021), 2021 with the Rams and the last three seasons (2022-24) with the Bills.
