USA Today [USA Today: Commanders Wire] - Is Terry McLaurin's absence from Commanders' OTA a real story at this point?

McLaurin did the same thing in 2022 (did not attend OTAs and then signed a new contract later that season). I guess there are two ways to look at this. Regardless of the level of esteem with which Adam Peters holds McLaurin as a current key part of this roster and for all of his contributions despite mediocre talent around him until recently, Peters is likely looking at Terry's age (30) and factoring that into his negotiating approach.

So the 1st way to look at the lack of a new contract at this point is to simply come to the conclusion that McLaurin is getting a little older and the team is being smart not to wildly overpay for a WR who probably will only be at the top of his game for one more contract.

The 2nd way to look at it is that McLaurin and his agent may view the team's reluctance to make Terry one of the top compensated WRs in the NFL as disrespect, or that it might motivate them to go to free agency after this season.

I currently land in the 1st camp. I think McLaurin is a highly professional player who understands all of the dynamics, likely isn't going to personalize contract negotiations, and probably expects that a very good deal can and will be worked out. On the other hand, I think that fans who believe McLaurin would never leave Washington, or that Peters and his front office will make whatever deal is necessary to keep him in DC, could be setting themselves up for a rude awakening.

Peters is going to do whatever he thinks is in the best long-term interests of this team. If that means saying goodbye to a valuable player and fan favorite because he can't justify overpaying for a player, no matter how good, who is on the back side of his career arc, he will do that.
