We are now sailing into the uncharted waters of the 2025 NFL free-agent signing period. This is also the time when most teams are trying to get their Salary Cap numbers into series amounts of black ink. Not to mention daily doses of college campus Pro Days for their star football players. And amid all this economic and NFL Draft prep there is the all-important time of the annual rites of Quarterback Carousel beginning with VFA then followed rapidly by the NFL Draft. Today in Tuesday Morning Pigskin, we talk about more teams shuffling QBs around than teams with their QB spot filled and settled.
And by Monday evening the vast majority of team QB shuffling was in place.
The big winner might appear to be the Sea Hawks, who signed SAM DARNOLD to replace Geno Smith whom they traded to the Raiders for a 3rd Round Pick in the upcoming Draft. To my eyes a trade-off that Seattle won. I am not going to bore you with years and dollars in this space today. You can get that online just about everywhere. What I do know. is that GM Schneider has to pull in some receiver help in the Draft and leftover VFA.
If any of the reports that JUSTIN FIELDS was the Steelers’ choice to re-sign with the Steelers, then they miscalculated their relationship with him because FIELDS is headed to the JETS on a 2-year contract. A slightly extended “show me” contract. This creates a bit of a dilemma for the Steelers. They just acquired the services of D.J. METCALF to pair with GEORGE PICKENS, but do not have a single QB on their roster. Right now many are postulating that AARON RODGERS & RUSSELL WILSON are the most likely VFA in the Steelers’ sights. Neither one seems to be a great fit to me, for various reasons. Stay tuned on this one.
The RAMS, who secured a deal last week with MATHEW STAFFORD, also got a new deal in place to keep JIMMY GAROPPOLO in RAMS blue as the top backup.
The BRONCOS announced the re-signing of JARRET STIDHAM to stay as BO NIX backup, but lost ZACH WILSON, former JETS Round 1 Pick to the Dolphins. The 25-year-old WILSON is hoping for some serious development under Head Coach Mike McDaniel. Time will tell.
VIKINGS backup NICK MULLENS is headed to Jacksonville to back up TREVOR LAWRENCE. So with DARNOLD headed to Seattle, the Vikings may find themselves in a slightly uncomfortable situation if DANIEL JONES does sign with another team soon. It would leave the Vikings with only J.J. McCarthy, their 2024 Rookie who missed the entire 2024 season to injury as their only kind-of veteran QB. This situation demands some serious consideration in the coming weeks.
The GIANTS find themselves in a rather unenviable situation with TOMMY DeVITO as their only signed QB on their roster. ARON RODGERS’ name comes up for this team as well. Are we looking at a situation where the Giants & Steelers battle it out for either WILSON or RODGERS?
We may be looking at the TITANS, BROWNS & GIANTS fighting it out to draft the top Rookie QB in CAMERON WARD & SHEDEUR SANDERS.
Probably the only wild card NFL vet options for someone who may be much traveled and now on the wrong side of 30 by the name of JAMEIS WINSTON or Jacoby Brissett.
One of the most aggressive teams on Monday to me was DA BEARS, under GM RYAN POLES. With a trade and several VFA signings, they may have totally rebuilt their IOL. They have traded for JOE THUNEY/Chiefs, and JONAH JACKSON/Rams and will sign DREW DALMAN/OC. We’ll see how much that improves protection for KALEB WILLIAMS this Summer. They also signed GRADY JARRETT/DT after he was cut by the Falcons this morning.
Perhaps one of the most humorous events was the BROWNS announcing a massive contract extension with MYLES GARRETT. He has spent most of the last month expressing his demand for a trade out of Cleveland because the Browns do not seem to gaining any ground in efforts to be a winning team. Money cures all ills on one hand, despite the saying that money can’t buy happiness.
By the time Wednesday rolls around I expect all Draftniks will be busy recalculating what teams will be looking for in the Draft after adding and losing VFA players.
Anybody having any doubts that the Washington Commanders are not “all in” now with new star QB JAYDEN DANIELS at the helm only need look at their huge trade early this evening to acquire LAREMY TUNSIL from the Texans to protect DANIELS blind side at LT. TUNSIL did not have a great season last season protecting C.J. STROUD, but his overall record as an NFL LT has been outstanding. Combine this with a multi-talented weapon in DEEBO SAMUEL and the Commanders Offense looks most promising as they chase the Eagles for NFC supremacy.
Heading back to the media sights to see which players agreed to move on to which teams while I typed these words.
