Tress Way is not surprised at all.

After Monday's first day of the Washington Commanders' mandatory minicamp, the veteran punter of 179 games (all with Washington) expressed that, with the way [owner] Josh Harris, [GM] Adam Peters, and [head coach] Dan Quinn treat everyone, he is not surprised at all that so many players and coaches are returning for Quinn's second season as head coach with the Commanders.

Way added, "How intentional everything is, and the competitiveness—if you're a competitive dude—it's no wonder why you would want to stay here and come back here. It's a huge breath of fresh air."

After eleven seasons punting in the NFL, Way concluded last season still averaging an impressive 46.9 yards on his 50 punts in 2024. Way spoke of the familiarity he already sees in the second year of Quinn's program and said that "familiarity also being a breath of fresh air and a huge plus."

When asked about his specific role for the 2025 season, Way first commented that he felt he had the best coverage guys in the league last year. "Last year, I was not as good directionally as I have been in the past, I think, kind of pressing."

Why would a punter be pressing? Well, there were games when Way was not punting at all. On the other hand, in past years when the Washington offense struggled, Way was getting an extra punt or two each game, and that creates a comfort or rhythm in being out there.

By analogy, consider Michael Jordan, who in many games would shoot ten to fifteen free throws in a game. It becomes easier to deliver from the line when you are at the line more often than getting fouled in the game's final minute, and you haven't been to the line the entire second half.

Tress Way is excited to be back and loves the culture and environment Dan Quinn has created. Listening to him, he convinces me that there are most likely many more Commanders who feel the same way.
