The Washington Commanders brand. What you like, what you don’t like, and suggestions to improve what we have.

A bit more info here. Only 4 teams in the history of the league changed their name without moving Cities.

“There are three other teams in the NFL that have changed their mascots without moving: the New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers and the Chicago Bears, while the Dallas Cowboys (previously Dallas Rangers) and Oakland Raiders (Oakland Senors previously) each rebranded their official names before playing any games in 1960”

Just reinforces how rare a thing this is we have had to deal with.
Yep. Not just rare, but unprecedented I would say. The Bears was a move from Decatur in the 1930s, and the Cowboys and Raiders never played under another name. The Jets happened before they were even part of the NFL. The only true example is the Steelers in 1940, which means it hasn’t happened in any of our lifetimes as fans. And of course we are the only team ever coerced to change their name.

The Washington franchise moved in 1937. At some point the 5 years in Boston fall away. This team has been here longer than most other teams have been in existence period.

I remember running into a Carolina fan and we had a mostly good natured jab at each other about our NFL caps we were wearing.

At the end of the day he started to talk about the Panthers' history and I said 'you guys aren't old enough as a franchise to have much history' :eclipsee-victoria:

That’s probably the biggest problem with the name change, we’ve lost our identity. Are the Commanders really the historic Redskins rebranded or have the Redskins died and been replaced by a corny expansion team called the Commanders? I’m trying to maintain the former, but I can see why somebody would say it is the latter. The franchise is trying to hold on to its history, and I hope they succeed, but I have my doubts.

EDIT: I now realize I read your post wrong, I thought the Panthers fan said the Commanders weren’t old enough to have much history. My mistake, but it shows where my mind is on this topic. I would just delete my reading comprehension fail, but other members have already replied to my post so I’m adding this note instead.

Given the choice, I would’ve definitely taken an expansion team over continuing with Snyder running the Redskins. Perhaps our identity was so tainted by Snyder that we are better off starting over anyway. This certainly has to be true for the younger fans who have only known the misery of the Snyder years.

Certainly feels more like the latter, but it sounds like Harris and Co. are at least somewhat sympathetic., with emphasis on the words " sounds like ", ... so far.

It definitely feels like a corny expansion team called the Commanders to me

The thing is our core identity was something we can no longer directly reference.

I do believe that they can create a new identity with Commanders that people could come to appreciate and connect to the way we used to connect to our prior brand. IF they lean hard into the Greco-Roman themes and make the spear a part of that new identity…I think over the long haul it can work. There are tweaks and subtle throwbacks that can make the connection.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Lean into the Roman stuff with subtle nods to the past. I think small connections here and there - and never running from almost 100 years of Redskins is important.

The Team/League under the WOSH added a whole other level of fuel to the animosity that was unnecessary. Literally trying to erase the Redskins to the point of only showing old film clips where the angles of the film ensured you could not see the most beautiful logo in the history of sports really sticks out as setting me off at the time.

I’m going to speculate that the W on the helmet in that picture doesn’t reflect the new alternate. I think they just used the standard uniform for the promo.

Could be much ado about nothing, but I doubt it. I think the HOG is keenly aware of how important this is to many of us.

I will say I would be very surprised if the new uniform does not have a spear on it somehow. I refuse to believe the focal point of media day meant nothing.

this wasn’t by accident

Of course, it could also be the black helmet with the W logo on it instead of the numbers. I suggested that I believe on page one and it would be an improvement.

Was thinking myself how funny that would be if that was all it was.
But I really dont think thats all it will be.

The black helmet with a W would still only leave us having two helmets ( provided said black helmet replaces our current black helmet, which of course it would ), and we're allowed three. So, I'm hoping we take advantage of that.

For what it’s worth somebody on Twitter under their post lightened the picture up and they think it’s one of those concussion protectors that’s actually on the helmet. I can’t tell for sure.

The thing I thought looked a little off is that the W looks too high on the helmet.

Interesting. July 9th is also the teams 93rd birthday.
