Terry Francona Sends Donald Trump Clear Message Amid Guardians Name Change Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Over a decade ago, Terry Francona signed on to become the Cleveland Indians’ manager. He departed the team in 2023, having experienced a pennant, nine winning seasons and one controversial name change.
The Indians became the Guardians ahead of the 2022 season, ending a decadeslong debate about the team’s name. Nearly four years later, President Donald Trump wants the Guardians and Washington Commanders (née Redskins and Football Team) to revert to their previous monikers.
Now managing the Cincinnati Reds, Francona reiterated he supported Cleveland’s name change. Francona also addressed the idea that Trump and older fans might ask, “Why can’t it be like it used to be?”
“My retort to that would be there’s probably a lot of people in this country that don’t want it to be like it used to be,” Francona said.
“If you’re white, (you’re) probably just fine,” Francona added. “That’s not how it’s supposed to work.”
Neither Trump nor the White House had addressed Francona’s comments at publication.
As it stands, don’t expect the Guardians or Commanders to change monikers anytime soon. Guardians President Chris Antonetti told the media last weekend that the team will stick with its new name, and the Commanders have said the same.
The real question is whether either team will eventually include their old logos on throwback or alternate uniforms. Washington recently unveiled its “Super Bowl era” throwback uniforms, which are essentially the Redskins uniforms without the Redskins logo.
“History doesn’t fade...it fuels the future,” the Commanders’ official X/Twitter account wrote in a separate post.
Additionally, you cannot find official Cleveland Indians uniforms in the "MLB The Show" video game. Cleveland’s throwback uniforms lack any depiction of Chief Wahoo.
