Despite the free agency moves by the Green Bay Packers this offseason, a new survey says that it's not enough for fans.
In a recent ranking based off the most popular general managers in the NFL during free agency, the Packers GM Brian Gutekunst ranks 31 out of the 32. The study comes from Betway, a British gambling company. The Packers GM received a 10% positive sentiment score.
The only GM who was less popular during free agency was Terry Fontenot of the Atlanta Falcons, who had a 9% positive sentiment. Two NFC North GMs were ranked in the top five — Kwesi Adofo-Mensah of the Minnesota Vikings was the second most liked GM at 88%, while Ryan Poles of the Chicago Bears ranked fourth at 70%. Brad Holmes of the Detroit Lions is the 11th most liked GM at 43%.
"While the Packers have made notable additions such as Nate Hobbs and Aaron Banks, many fans seem to feel like the team needs a little bit more," Betway said.
Betway used a social listening tool to monitor online mentions of each NFL general manager in their team’s home location. The GMs were ranked highest to lowest by the percentage of positive sentiment in social media mentions from March 10-21.
Following the signings of Hobbs and Banks, the Packers also picked up wide receiver Mecole Hardman, a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs.
It seems like Hardman wasn't the Packers fans' first choice. At the beginning of free agency, rumors swirled around the Packers being interested in trading for receiver D.K. Metcalf, while also looking into Cooper Kupp and a reunion with Davante Adams.
None of those All-Pro receivers ended up becoming Packers, as Metcalf was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kupp signed with the Seattle Seahawks, and Adams joined the Los Angeles Rams.
Fans on social media also talked about the Packers beefing up their defense by acquiring the Cleveland Browns' Myles Garrett, a former NFL Defensive Player of the Year, or Maxx Crosby of the Las Vegas Raiders. Neither of those happened.
Gutekunst and the Packers did have a successful free agency in 2024, when they acquired running back Josh Jacobs and safety Xavier McKinney. Jacobs had a career high 16 touchdowns in the 2024 NFL season, while McKinney was first team All-Pro with a career high eight interceptions for the season.
According to Betway, here are the most liked NFL GMs based on percentage of positive sentiment.
