STATEMENT BY WASHINGTON REDSKINS OWNER DAN SNYDER:

“Roger Goodell has always had the best interests of football at heart, both on and off the field. We are fortunate to have him as our Commissioner. The entire Washington Redskins organization strongly endorses his efforts to eradicate domestic abuse and the independent investigation into the Ray Rice assault.”

This makes me want to puke. Goodell cared more about keeping Ray Rice out of the headlines and the NFL's good image than he did doing the right thing. And having a bunch of soulless rich owners trying to cover for him is disgusting. Lost what remaining respect I had for Snyder today. And yes, no doubt this is going out from all NFL owners - but it reflects an overall tone-deafness that some things are far more important than the NFL's image. It's astounding to me that even now the NFL doesn't get that.

Goodell screwed up. Big time. It's time to at least admit that and come clean. I think it's a big enough error in judgment that it should cost him his job as well.

STATEMENT BY WASHINGTON REDSKINS OWNER DAN SNYDER:

“Bro's before Ho's”

To play devil's advocate for a moment here, what do you think would happen if the owner of an NFL franchise took a stand against Goodell and his disingenuous handling of situations such as this-especially Dan Snyder? Snyder is playing the "company man" game in order to protect the Redskins as an NFL franchise owner should. Given the recent, shall we say, strained? relationship the Redskins have had with Goodell (the stolen cap money?) and the current name controversy-which, right at the moment, Goodell and the rest of the owners are carefully side-stepping, Snyder is adopting a strategy of not providing Goodell with any good reason to "throw Washington to the wolves", so to speak.

BTW, I offer this as a plausible explanation of why Snyder may be doing this and in no way is this to be construed as a defense of him, Goodell, NFL ownership, wife-beating, or anything else.:smile-new:

That's what makes it so despicable serv (and I know you already know that). It's self-interest vs. everything else. Just look at Jerry Richardson (Panther's owner) getting up in front of the press and getting all verklempt over how horrific domestic violence is, then using the excuse that he needs to let the 'legal process play out' while continuing to play the domestic abuser on his own team.

I'm not expecting any owner to condemn Roger Goodell. He does deserve, from an organizational perspective, to have all the facts heard before any action, if any, is taken against him. But what this kind of BS statement is most approximate to would be high level leaders chiming in with support for a CEO during a corporate compliance investigation. The truth is, at best the NFL owners don't know what Goodell did here and are taking his statements as 100% fact (and they are some pretty tough-to-believe-facts at that). At worst, they know he did exactly what it appears he did, and are putting the NFL's and their own interests, above what's right.

When due process has come due yet, a wise person keeps their effing mouth shut.

And if you all don't think that there are future favors being banked right now for this kind of support, well, you might want to consider that. There's also no guarantee that a 'next NFL commissioner' would support keeping the Redskins name - and don't think that thought isn't in the mix here too.

It's all enough to make you want to walk away from the NFL entirely. Even I can tolerate only so much hypocrisy.

serv, I immediately had that feeling when reading it. Snyder has been black listed and to come out and torch Goodell when it's very likely that the other 31 owners are going to be in full support of him would be Name Change nightmare. Like you said.. just a "maybe because of' kind of thing.

Those aren't the only two choices. He could just keep his mouth shut until all the facts are known. There are enough things that ARE known already to cause great concern about Roger Goodell's judgment and competency. It's incredibly tone deaf in my opinion for NFL owners to be commenting in any way on this situation, and they really risk looking like they are endorsing the idea that Roger Goodell's employment status and the reputation of the NFL are more important than some woman getting knocked unconscious by one of their players.

I agree, but I wouldn't begin to doubt that the other owners/league office are going to squeezing the owners to come out in support. What really sucks is Snyder can be blackmaled beyond words right now with the intensity of the name debate.

The new NFL theme song should be Beat It.

I agree with serv. Snyder's response is all about protecting his interest.

That part is obvious. My point is that it shows a disgusting tone-deafness and self-interest that drove the mistakes made to date, and apparently from which none of the NFL leadership or owners has learned a thing.

Yep. If I tow the party line on this, will you give some backing on the name debate/new stadium/Super Bowl venue??? Yeah, sound, nice one Rog xxxx

Idiocy on the part of Snyder sometimes puts things in perspective for me and helps to remind me why this franchise has been sleeping in the basement for the better part of the last 23 years.

I have to disagree in the sense that Goodell & other owners in the League have vocally supported the Redskins name & have stated that there won't be a push for a change.

With that said, I do agree that he is being the "company man" & equally vocally supporting the Commish for that very reason.

Snyder is out of line

It is sickening to see Snyder attempt to stay in the good graces with Goodall. Goodall should have been fired when he placed a one year suspension on Sean Payton because there was zero proof that Payton knew about the "pay for hurt scheme". Goodall should have been fired for his collusion with Mara against the Cowboys and the Redskins and now Goodall should at a bare minimum be placed on paid administrative leave until it is determined whether he knew about the tape that was received by th4 NFL in April.

Goodall pretends to be be so pious, but his actions don't show it. Despicable.

I totally agree. With that said, I'm not sure people realize just how great he's been for these owners financially.

I don't mean he's been great, I mean the best ever in any sport in history. Literally.

Great if you're an owner. Not so great in the real world. But here's a short list of his accomplishments:

1. Goodell created Thursday night football. I hate TNF, but on average, it produces an extra $22 million per team, every single season. Honestly, if your boss put an extra $22 mill a year into your pocket, you'd love him.

2. He just oversaw the new CBA. No more Jamarcus Russell $50 million guaranteed contracts. If you're an owner, that's absolutely huge. He just reduced your risk enormously.

I can go on and on, but won't. I hate long posts. But I promise you, the list of financial accomplishments is long.

So translation: Roger Goodell has helped me make a crapload in profits. Thank you Dan Snyder cementing your reputation as a total jackass. You should have shut up rather than kiss the butt of supreme jerk.

I'm about done with the NFL. I'm done supporting horrible, selfish, hypocritical as hell jerks. I'm done with buying any more NFL apparel.

Having seen a close girlfriend endure DV (ironically, she was a Ravens cheerleader, go figure) and how it destroyed her until she was able to summon the courage and leave, I'm repulsed by just about every detail of how this case was handl, I mean covered up. That Goodell didn't do the right thing in the first place and is now lying his ass off in front of the cameras as well as getting high profile owner support is just extremely disheartening. It's really maddening to me that none of these men have truly stood up for what is right, but proclaim they sincerely give a rat's about DV victims. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Crapload is an understatement. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan.

But google the 60 Minutes piece about him to truly understand what we're talking about here.
