“I’ve definitely seen a difference with David Amerson”, Gruden declared without hesitation. “Amerson is playing with a lot of confidence, a lot of swag about him…you can see him maturing in only his second year. I really like where he’s going.”

It was what Gruden said next that caught my attention.

“I really think he has got a chance to be one of the top corners in the NFL for a long time.”

I agree with him, and believe he can improve rapidly. Think about his practices. Covering Desean Jackson on one series, and then trying to stop Garçon the next. And then throwing in a sprinkle or two of Andre Roberts, Santana Moss and others for good measure.

Then include some mentoring and inspiration from D Hall on how to be a professional.

If this guy can learn the right angles and positioning to prevent Jackson from blowing right by him, then no one will beat him deep.

If he can learn the right tackling technique and stance against a physical receiver like Garçon, then no one will intimidate him.

This guy has a dream practice environment in which he can become elite. The all-around corner who can do everything.

And then, Step 2, if he could pass that information along to Rambo, that would be great, too

These great WRs will also benefit the development of every single DB we have.

When you practice against talent like Jackson, Garcon, Roberts, Reed and Moss every single day, the games will really slow down for them.

Our secondary, one of our biggest weaknesses as of late, is likely to be one of our biggest strengths in upcoming seasons. I'm fired up.

I'll wait until I see it in action against the best teams. but....if he is on such a trajectory...that would be a huge plus for this team. we're gonna need to replace D-Hall in the not too distant future. If Amerson can mature into a Pro Bowl quality DB, then that widens the options on what is manageable to pair him with on the other other side.

Excellent.

Folks, we knew what the upside was on him. Athletic, long corners like Amerson don't fall from the sky. He just had to get his mind right. That's the strategy of bringing in a veteran like Clark for the secondary...get the young guy's minds right!

That's a good point.

Back when opposing teams were terrified of throwing to Darrell Green's side of the field, you could expect the corner opposite to get lots of opportunities to give up yardage. Yet guys with names like Martin Mayhew, Barry Wilburn and A.J. Johnson always seemed to play above their ability in filling the role (We're talking about guys taken in the 10th, 8th and 6th rounds. Buffalo thought highly enough of Mayhew to let him go after drafting him).

Sure, we had good talent evaluators and coaches, but without practice, all the talent and teaching in the world won't amount to much, and all three of these guys got to hone their skills in practice against The Posse. To them, facing the Eagles must have seemed like a vacation in the islands.

I'm pretty sure nobody ever achieved greatness practicing against Desmond Howard.

Great post Sam

The rookie DB Breeland looks like he's pretty good, too. At least, based on scant reports from minicamps.
