I ask, because it's an extremely quirky thing to some, but I have just always been one of those overly superstitious types. Sometimes I don't even realize I am until it's pointed out, because things just become habit.
My current superstition is simple. My daughter loves making bracelets for everyone, for any reason. Oddly enough, it is becoming quite apparent she just may be a wizard, and these things might possess some mystical powers after what was just brought to my attention.
Early this season, during the preseason, my daughter decided to make me a burgundy & gold bracelet. She laughed at the fact that every time I wore it, the good guys won. This carried over to the regular season. We re 3-0 when I wear it, 0-5 when I don't. I took it off after the Rams game, because I had to rebuild the engine on my leaf blower and didn't want to ruin it. My daughter brought it in from the garage today from where I had left it and asked me how long it's been in there. That's when it dawned on me that we have been on our skid since I rebuilt that engine.
That alone was not enough to make me a believer in these magical bracelets, however. A very dear friend of mine spent the last year battling narcotic pill addiction and alcoholism. It nearly ended her life. She stopped by last week to thank me for being the only one to stand by her side, and the whole time she was talking, she was stroking this bracelet on her wrist. I asked her where she got it, and she informed me it was from my daughter. She then proceeded to tell me a story about how she had been wearing it every day since my daughter gave it to her, and that her eye opening moment that made her go to rehab and sober up, was when she was considering killing herself by OD this Summer. She went to open the bottle, and it became entangled in the bracelet. She was so drunk that it frustrated her, because she couldn't figure out what the bottle was caught on. When she saw that it was the bracelet, she said she took it as a sign that my daughter was telling her to stop. So she did, and entered treatment within 48 hours. As of today, she is 85 days clean and sober, because of the bracelet.
The very first bracelet my daughter made was for our Border Collie Kiko that passed away last year. She was out back using the bathroom one night, and yelped and ran into the house pouring blood from a hole in her side. It looked like she had been shot, and we rushed her to the animal hospital. They told us that she had mammary cancer, and a tumor had ruptured. The gave her 3 days. When we came home with her that night, my daughter made her a bracelet, and tied it to her collar. She lived over 3 weeks until Christmas morning, hours after chewing off the bracelet.
Now I am not delusional, and I am fully aware that this is quite a set of coincidental circumstances. I get that, and it makes an amazingly freaky story. However, the superstitious side of me can't help but wonder what if?
So for now, I have my bracelet on. One of two things will happen. We are either about to enjoy an 8 game winning streak to end the season, or the Dolphins will beat us and take away the mystique
I will admit though, I will get goose bumps if we have an abnormally great game out of the clear blue this week.
