NRG Energy, Washington Redskins Celebrate FedExField Solar Installation with “NRG Solar Bowl” Quarterback Challenge
WHO: Former NFL quarterbacks Joe Theismann and Mark Rypien, both Washington Redskins’ alumni,
Joe Montana and Doug Flutie, Pro and college football MVPs
David Crane, CEO, NRG Energy
WHAT: NRG Energy and the Washington Redskins will celebrate the largest solar installation at an NFL stadium with the “NRG Solar Bowl” Quarterback Challenge. During the challenge, fans will receive skills coaching from legendary Redskins quarterbacks Joe Theismann and Mark Rypien as well as pro and college MVPs Joe Montana and Doug Flutie at FedExField.
Crane, Theismann and Rypien will “flip the switch” on the solar installation at FedExField during halftime with a display on the stadium’s video board to help engage fans for this event.
WHEN: Sunday, September 18, 2011
NRG Quarterback Challenge: 10 a.m. to noon
Flipping the Switch: Halftime (Kickoff is at 1 p.m.)
WHERE: FedExField
Landover, MD
NRG Quarterback Challenge: NRG Gate A, across from Parking Lot A1
Flipping the Switch: On FedExField
BACKGROUND: The NRG solar installation at FedExField is capable of powering the stadium on non-game days and of providing 20 percent of its electricity needs on game days – the equivalent of providing 300 Maryland households with electricity for an entire year. By using solar power technologies, the Redskins and NRG expect to keep 1,780 metric tons of carbon out of the atmosphere each year – the equivalent of replacing 349 vehicles with gasoline engines with zero emission electric vehicles.
