Meetings with Kyle Shanahan give RG3 a head start
By Rich Campbell
NEW YORK | Robert Griffin III already has a beginner's knowledge of the Redskins' playbook, and the team can't even draft him until Thursday.
Griffin believes his meetings with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Waco, Texas this month provide him some momentum entering the quarterback competition when he reports to the offseason workouts this spring.
"It’s hard to say you grasp the whole offense," he said at a marketing event in midtown Manhattan on Tuesday morning. "You can know the formations and know what they’re trying to do, and in that form it’s hitting the ground running. But they didn’t come in there and throw the playbook at me 1) because it’s illegal, and 2) because it just wouldn’t be smart. With rookie quarterbacks, you just want to ease them into it as fast as you can.
At this point, Griffin is familiarizing himself with the concepts Shanahan employs.
"It’s been great because I understand what they’re trying to do," he said. "If you can grasp their scheme, it helps you. I know what they’re trying to do with the formations, with the motions, with certain plays. But by no means could I go out today and play a game with that offense because I just haven’t done it.
"They’re great concepts. Of course, Coach [Mike] Shanahan is great with the zone scheme, and then the play action off of that. That’s what we did extremely well at Baylor this past year, so I’m looking forward to doing it again."
