I **** you not. :)

Robert Griffin III says he'll have to beat out Rex Grossman

Robert Griffin III isn't taking anything for granted. Well, he's taking for granted that the Washington Redskins will select him with the No. 2 overall pick in this week's NFL draft. (Which is smart after the Indianapolis Colts made it official with Andrew Luck on Tuesday.)

But Griffin doesn't take it for granted that he'll be the No. 1 quarterback in Washington. He has to beat out Rex Grossman first.

"You can't come in thinking that you're a big dog," Griffin said Tuesday via CBS DC at a pre-draft event in New York. "I might be the second pick, I might be who the fans want as a quarterback and the coaches want as a quarterback but I’ve still got to go beat out Rex Grossman

"Rex Grossman is the quarterback in Washington right now, and I've got to go beat him out. I've got to prove to those guys that I'm there to work and I will, it's who I am. I'll be the first one in, last one out, and it won't be a cliché with me."

Griffin was in New York to help promote a deeply disturbing, sandwich-meat "statue" that Subway put together. (Here's the take on "RG3½" from ATL sandwich expert Dan Hanzus.)

Some might scoff at Griffin saying all the right things, but his recognition of Grossman is smart. And competing with Grossman is not a crazy notion. The Redskins likely won't install Griffin as the top guy on Day 1. Grossman often is the butt of jokes, but he has started a lot of games (including the Super Bowl) and played fairly well for Washington last season.

We're not saying Grossman has much of a chance to be the Week 1 starter. But Griffin is approaching this the right way: The Redskins probably won't just hand over the keys to the franchise to him during the offseason.

For now, Griffin is just a rookie. Even if he's a rookie well known enough to inspire a sandwich statue.

He also made comments like that on Mike & Mike this morning if I recall correctly.

His attitude is exactly what you would want. Hopefully it's real, and not just what his agent is telling him to say. That's not to suggest I don't think its genuine, I do.

I can't wait to see him at mini camps... my god i normally don't get this excited this early, it normally comes when the tickets show up at my door in august...

Boy, I sure hope he beats out Rax at SOME point. It's gonna be tough.

Seriously though, every time this kid opens his mouth, I like him more.

Hmmmm... maybe we could make a list of things that would be harder than RGIII beating out Rex?

When RG3 was talking to Steve Mariucci he talked about how he'd be willing to hold the clipboard for Peyton Manning, and I think he was being sincere.

With Grossman, this is just about saying the right thing.

It wouldn't completely surprise me if Sexy Rexy was the starter when the Skins visit the Superdome on September 9, but Grossman would have the shortest leash imaginable.

a buddy and i were throwing the football the other day.

we were talking about how we could throw as well as grossman. and we were not kidding. dude has a noodle arm. i'm 27, 6'1, 175lbs, smoked for 9 years (just recently quit) and just started working out again for the first time in 6 years. i can throw a 25 yard floater on the money to a moving target just as well as grossman can.

if rg3 doesn't beat him out the first week of training camp, then we just used a **** load of 1st rounders for nothing.

grossman is awful. absolutely awful. i thought for sure you couldn't do worse than mcnabb after his 3/4 of a year here. apparently i was wrong.

On that, you weren't wrong. Grossman was better than McNabb. But that's not saying much.

Grossman actually throws a pretty strong ball from 40yds in. His problem is throwing to the guy wearing a uniform that matches his own.

Oh, and since we're exercising our braggadocio, in my younger days, I could throw a measured 68 yards with an official NFL size football.

I have issues with Grossman. Last year he came into camp out of shape even though he knew he was likely to see time on the field with the club.

That and his poor decision-making make him less than an ideal candidate as the 'veteran' presence on the roster to help Griffin transition.

Seems Griffin might have some things to teach Grossman in re proper preparation as an athlete.

True. You are way ahead of me. I gave up even trying at golf over a decade ago because my math skills were not up to tracking my score.

Ha! This, and escaping pressure/throwing the ball away are his two main problems. And his two main problems generally lead to multiple turnovers per game!

Of course RGIII has to beat out Rex Grossman. I don't understand why people are surprised by this comment? Rex Grossman is the starter, Griff is the heir apparent. Until he beats him out, THAT is the scenario, as it has been forever and always in the NFL.
