REDSKINS SIGN WR DESEAN JACKSON

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent wide receiver DeSean Jackson. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Jackson (5-10, 175) was originally selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round (49th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 87 regular season games with 86 starts, compiling 7,813 all-purpose yards and 39 total touchdowns, all with Philadelphia from 2008-13.

For his career, the three-time Pro Bowler has amassed 356 receptions for 6,117 yards (17.2 avg.) with 32 receiving touchdowns and 57 rushing attempts for 373 yards (6.5 avg.) and three rushing touchdowns. He has also returned 131 punts for 1,294 yards (9.9 avg.) with four touchdowns and has added 29 yards on four kick returns.

Last season, Jackson started all 16 regular season games for Philadelphia for the first time in his career and also started his sixth career postseason game. During the regular season, Jackson posted career highs in receptions (82) and receiving yards (1,332) and matched his career high with nine receiving touchdowns en route to his third career Pro Bowl selection – his first since making consecutive Pro Bowl appearances after the 2009-10 seasons.

In 2009, Jackson became the first player in NFL history to make the Pro Bowl at two different positions, earning berths at both wide receiver and kick returner. That season, Jackson scored eight touchdowns covering 50 yards or more, tying an NFL record previously held by Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch (1951) and Devin Hester (2007). From 2008-10, Jackson became one of only two players in NFL history to have recorded a rushing touchdown, receiving touchdown and punt return touchdown in each of his first three seasons, joining Dick Todd, who accomplished the feat with the Redskins from 1939-41.

Jackson played collegiately at California from 2005-07, appearing in 36 games with 34 starts. He recorded 162 receptions for 2,423 yards (15.0 avg.) with 22 receiving touchdowns and added 24 rushing attempts for 199 yards (8.3 avg.) and one rushing touchdown. He also returned 38 career punts for 633 yards (16.7 avg.) with six touchdowns. He earned All-Pac-10 honors in both 2006 and 2007, and was named as a consensus All-American as a punt returner as a sophomore in 2006.

Jackson, 27, attended Long Beach (Calif.) Polytechnic H.S, where he received the 2004 Glenn Davis Award from the Los Angeles Times as Southern California's Player of the Year. He was born on Dec. 1, 1986.

WHAT THE REDSKINS ARE SAYING ABOUT DESEAN JACKSON

“We’re excited to have him. Any time you have an opportunity to get a splash player like DeSean Jackson, you have to do your best to get him. Fortunately Bruce Allen and Dan Snyder got it done, but we’re excited to have the competitor and the player of DeSean’s caliber.” - Head Coach Jay Gruden

“I’m excited to have another weapon. The guy is mad fast and I think, overall, it definitely helps the offense.” - Running Back Alfred Morris

“DeSean is a great player. He can help our offense, help our team. You know he’s definitely going to open up things. We’re going to make plays for each other and help get the ball into the end zone.” - Wide Receiver Pierre Garçon, as told to Larry Michael on Redskins Nation

“He just brings another home run hitter that I’m very excited to play with. Any time you get a Pro Bowl caliber guy in free agency, I think it does a lot for the team.” -Tackle Trent Williams
