REDSKINS SIGN S AKEEM DAVIS

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent safety Akeem Davis. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Davis (6-1, 200) played collegiately at Memphis from 2008-12 after spending his freshman season in 2007 at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Miss. At Memphis, he played in 34 career games with 27 starts and was twice named a team captain. During that time, he recorded 162 career tackles (13 for loss), three interceptions, 2.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

Davis, 24, attended Laurel (Miss.) H.S., where he started at cornerback as a sophomore and started at quarterback as a junior and senior. He threw for more than 2,600 yards and rushed for 926 yards en route to a 4A state championship as a senior in 2007. He was born on Dec. 25, 1989.

Thank goodness for the Rule of 51. We can now sign those 20 camp bodies for minimum and get to 70-75.

It's funny the Post referred to Gumbs as a non factor on defense but a strong special teams contributor.

When Cooley broke down the ST film he indicated more often than not that Gumbs appeared lost and out of position frequently.

Here's to hoping this year we find backups that are quality Special teamers.
