PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release
April 3, 2014

REDSKINS SIGN QB COLT MCCOY

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed unrestricted free agent quarterback Colt McCoy. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

McCoy (6-1, 215) was originally selected by the Cleveland Browns in the third round (85th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. He spent his first three seasons with the Browns from 2010-12 before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers on April 1, 2013.

For his career, McCoy has played in 28 games with 21 starts, completing 410-of-703 passes (58.3 percent) for 4,401 yards with 21 touchdowns. He saw his most extensive action as a member of the Browns in 2011, starting all 13 games in which he appeared and finishing the season 265-of-463 passing for 2,733 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

McCoy starred collegiately at Texas from 2006-09, temporarily setting a record for the most career wins by a starting quarterback in NCAA history (45). He completed 1,157-of-1,645 career passes for 13,253 yards with 112 touchdowns and 45 interceptions while adding 447 rushing attempts for 1,571 yards and 20 touchdowns. At the time of his graduation, McCoy was the only quarterback in history to win at least 10 or more games in each of his four collegiate seasons. As a senior in 2009, he received the Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and was named Big 12 Player of the Year.

McCoy, 27, attended Jim Ned H.S. in Tuscola, Texas, where he was twice named Associated Press Class 2A Offensive MVP and a first-team all-state selection. He was born on Sept. 5, 1986

Don't be so sure. Could be covering our ass in anticipation of moving Kirk.

Yeah. I guess I've prematurely resigned to thinking no one will give us a solid pick for him. Maybe when someone goes down in camp.

A couple of weeks ago on Cleveland sports radio they were sure that Rexy was going to the Browns. It hasn't happened yet, but I would think that it would with the Kyle connection....

The FO likely hedging their bet "just in case" an offer comes in for Captain Kirk. Worst case scenario, we have a decent 3rd string QB as I'm sure he'll be competing against a UDFA. Pretty good move.

No way of knowing - but I think Kirk wants a chance to start and if we ever plan to move him, now is likely the time to do it. I'll be surprised if we carry 3 QBs this season. That means Kirk is officially tradebait.

I'd guess McCoy becomes our #2.

Just a guess.
From the surface, it might appear as if what they're preparing to do.
On the other hand, I personally don't think he's good enough for #2.
I'm not even sure he stays at #3.
He could be just a body in camp. Or be considered as competition for #3, only to lose.

McCoy doesn't have a strong downfield arm, but he is a capable game manager. If your starter goes down for a game or two he can come in and execute the basic offense. What he is not going to do is take over from Griffin and start 13 or 14 games and take the Redskins to the playoffs.

But these days there aren't many teams that have capable backups. Seattle won with Tarvaris Jackson as the backup.

Would I take a #2 pick for Cousins in a very deep draft? Yes.

This year there are going to be guys that go in Round 2 that would have been first rounders in past years.

If we can find that RT, S or strong ILB for the 3-4, that would be worth taking more of a gamble behind Griffin.

Last year showed that even with Cousins on the field, if the supporting cast is not there, injured or not motivated to perform the Redskins are still going to be team on the short end of the score.

Surprised the post hasn't ran a QB controversy piece yet. Could be they need to have "journalist" ota's or something?

I expected a 3rd arm before camp and won't be surprised at a 4th at some point. UDFA or the like. Skins typically have carried three QB's into the season, so don't see this as a replacement for Kirk. Maybe he's around for 6 month's, maybe longer. Minimal salary, nothing to read into this than more than what it is.

Terrelle Pryor anyone?
He won't clear waivers most likely & Skins are pretty far down the list after claiming Brandon 'Smokin' Moore ____ (fill in your own blank...) a few weeks ago. Buc's might place a claim. Couple of other teams are at least looking for an arm in camp. Vikes got the last claim so they are on the bottom of the wire. Breaking news might be to try and entice a trade out of Minn before he gets released Monday?

We will have the second choice of making any waiver claims until the fifth game of the season. Houston is first. But yes, Pryor will not end up here.

Thanx for the correction on when the waiver order reseeding takes place. Agree that it won't be here. Although I think now the order changes after week 3 based on current season standings. It does keep changing.
