REDSKINS SIGN DRAFT CHOICES MORRIS, COMPTON;
SIGN FIVE COLLEGE FREE AGENTS

ASHBURN, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed 2012 sixth-round draft picks running back Alfred Morris (173rd overall) and tackle Tom Compton (193rd overall). The team also signed five college free agents. Terms of the deals were not disclosed. The team also waived college free agent defensive lineman Vaughn Meatoga and wide receiver Kelvin Bolden.

The college free agents include:

PLAYER POSITION HEIGHT WEIGHT EXPERIENCE COLLEGE
Brian Hernandez WR 6-0 181 R Utah
Delvin Johnson DL 6-3 321 R Marshall
Samuel Kirkland WR 6-0 191 R Kent State
Nick Martinez OL 6-4 307 R Oklahoma State
Beau Reliford TE 6-6 268 R Florida State

Morris (5-10, 215) played collegiately at Florida Atlantic, where he appeared in 47 games, starting his final 36. He finished his collegiate career at FAU as the school’s all-time leader in rushing yards (3,529), rushing attempts (733), rushing touchdowns (27), rushing yards per game (75.1) and all-purpose yards (3,843).

Compton (6-5, 315) played collegiately at South Dakota where he started all 43 games in which he played. He was a two-time first-team All-Great West Conference selection (2010 & 2011).

How can you waive a guy who plays on the D-line, and has a name like MEAT ?

I dug around and found a scouting report on Meatoga (I've read it's pronounced "Moo-Ah Tong-Uh) and from what NationalFootballPost has to say I kinda wonder what Shanny saw on film that attracted him to the guy.

Meatoga possesses a shorter, thickly built frame with natural girth through his upper body. He displays decent bend sitting into his stance and possesses a "plus" first step off the football. He gets into contact quickly, can keep his lap level down when working the bull rush and he can create a push inside. He looks violent with his hands when trying to disengage, but displays only average awareness and will take himself out of some plays. However, when he stays low, he can create penetration inside. He's a bit "straight-line-ish" as a rusher, though. When trying to disengage he will get upright, gives up leverage and is easy to stick to. He needs to win with his first step and keep himself clean from contact. He showcases a savvy little arm over off the snap when he can slip, but routinely pops upright and can be pushed past the football.

Meatoga has at best average anchor strength inside vs. the run game. He showcases solid awareness and will use his hands to fight off blocks and keep his pad level down. However, he can be overwhelmed/washed out of plays at times inside one-on-one and is easily pushed around by any type of double. He isn't overly long at the point to gain leverage, but can sit low when he comes off the football inline. He has good coordination on the move when asked to defend slide down blocks and showcases plus range and motor off his frame.

Impression: He displays some get off burst, short area quickness and hand violence, but isn't a dynamic pass rusher and will have a tough time vs. the run early. He needs to get a bit stronger, but is worth a late round look.

well, the bio seems to indicate that he needs to build his strength to better anchor but that he has the lateral quickness and athletic ability to potentially be an inside player in the NFL.

obviously, being cut on Day 1 of the first mini-camp is a sign that Meatoga was simply too much of a project.

... and, one quietly hopes, that the Redskins are, if not already there, at least approaching the point where they don't need to take on projects any longer.

..... hope you're right, now that the FO is acutally listening to the scouting dept. there might a few more finds discovered amongst the shallow end of the talent pool.
