REDSKINS SIGN COLLEGE FREE AGENTS

Chase Minnifield CB 6-0 185 R Virginia
For anyone who doesn't know, he is the son of former NFL cornerback Frank Minnifield, who played for Cleveland Browns, a 4-time Pro Bowler, was an original Dawg Pound member, and once sued the USFL for the right to go to the NFL :)

Lance Lewis burned Bills 1st round pick Stephon Gilmore a couple of times when East Carolina played South Carolina. I think this could be an even bigger surprise than Chase Minnifield. A good friend who does the only sports' Talk Show in the Outer Banks went to ECU and says this is another solid signing from his alma mater...Willie Smith last year.

Here's the video again: at the 28 second mark and 1:38 mark are the 2 bigs plays against Gilmore.

Hmmmm, Lance doesn't have much of a chance, in our crowded receivers' circumstance.
But if he scores for the Skins, I'm sure his TD celebration will be called the "Lance Dance"

Current Roster
Armstrong
Austin
Banks
Garçon
Hankerson
Morgan
Moss
Robinson

UDFA's
Bolden
Hanks
Lewis

Last year we kept 8, I don't see that again this year...I'll say 6, maybe 7.

Garçon, Hankerson, Moss and Morgan are the only ones I see as definite.

Robinson likely staying if reports of his progress are accurate.

That leaves 6 WR's vying for one slot, maybe 2.

So, there are the 3 rookies vying for the final slot with 2 vets who haven't been able to maintain much consistency and a knuckle headed speedster who gets more and more frail with every hit and likes to run it out from 9 yards deep who offers nothing to the offense.

I think Armstrong and Austin are gone, with Banks. But Banks might run one back in the final game of the pre-season again to make the squad.

We might be able to remove Banks from the equation like last year ceding his position as a specialist. Maybe he's the 7th or 8th receiver.

Yeah, it would be an uphill climb, but my friend is high on this kid and he is not much of a homer for ECU He was right about Willie Smith, so I will give him some credit.

Yep, mainly because of Cousins. He'll be our extra QB, and extra roster spot this year, since he probably wouldn't survive the PS.
However, some analysts say we may keep as little as 5 receivers, which could mean more trouble for both veterans and rookies alike.
All things considered, Lewis may end up on the PS

Not sure Moss will be back, El. That may open up another slot, and I think Armstrong will have to have a monster TC and Preseason to be back, fair or unfair.

You may be correct about Moss because of his salary cap number. We should know better tomorrow if the cap will be a concern going into the season after the hearing.

As for Armstrong, I am not sure. If he does not have a monster training camp and pre-season like you say, I think we move on. Other than Moss now that Gaffney is gone, he is the oldest WR on the squad. He's 29 and with the exception of a few great catches and some fairly solid numbers 2 years ago, he hasn't done much in the NFL that would warrant any more patience with him. I think I would prefer a younger Aldrick Robinson(who has a year in this offense) or one of the UDFA's if they can break out.

Perhaps of interest.

Over at the other “place”... LegendaryFan posted up comments from Shanny’s Chalk Talk and amongst all of the chatter you can find

LegendaryFan said:
ooooh, which reminds me: He said Moss looks to be in the best shape he's ever been in and that he had dropped 20lbs. He said Moss appears to be fighting hard to earn a spot on the team. He said he's lighter, faster, and very determined (or something to that effect. Don't take my words as exact quotes). He said similar things about Cooley--who also dropped a ton of weight.

Anything that helps Santana get open is a good thing :) Not like he was ever a big guy to begin with. Speed is his best friend in terms of avoiding big hits.

Having a guy like Griffin to deliver the ball has just got to excite and motivate some of these vets like never before. Or so I would think.

Yeah, some of these vets are probably thinkin' "it's about friggin' time we got serious".

I really feel for the likes of Moss and Cooley, both in the twilight of their careers and having suffered through the dysfunction of the past only to seemingly be on the bubble at a time of upward transition.

TomE,

That is precisely why I can see them busting their asses to be as effective as possible. If were them I'd be clawing tooth and nail to hold off the younger guys in order to hang on for as long as they can during the "up swing".

Me too! People always give me crap for going out of my way to watch preseason games; this is the best part of football for me. Seeing the unheralded guys doing everything they can to make the squad. Football at its purest!

I see Garçon, Hankerson & Robinson as the only locks to make the roster, personally. Aldrick is a speedster who started to come on last season, and was signed to the active roster to protect from getting scooped up by another team. I think they're holding open tryouts for 4-5 WR spots, which is awesome. I love seeing competitions for roster spots! Earn that spot young man! I also think Moss will be a June 1st cut, or will be traded prior to camps opening up.

So, there are the 3 rookies vying for the final slot with 2 vets who haven't been able to maintain much consistency and a knuckle headed speedster who gets more and more frail with every hit and likes to run it out from 9 yards deep who offers nothing to the offense.
Did you see the other thread? Banks might lose his spot to Crawford!

EDIT: in Banks' defense, I've read that it was Danny Smith who told him to take it out or kneel it down. Fire Danny Smith!
