I think we can safely put more on the table to move up and get RG3 than most think. What leads me to that conclusion is the two articles I read over at Redskins Hog Heaven. One explores the offense and one the defense, in terms of cap, cost, and chance of retention. Both are a good read.
What I take away from these articles is:
1. Allen intends to supplement this team more by trade or signing free agents than through the draft, even though the draft has worked out better than FA.
2. Player contracts over the last 2 years have better situated us than any other team in the league to go after free agents and not break the bank.
If we have the money and inclination to go after available talent in free agency, and we do, Allen and Shanahan will be willing and able to trade as many draft picks as it takes to nail either Luck or RG3 without substantially weakening the team; especially if our FA signings are younger/hungry guys who have good attitudes, work eithics, and character. All of our FA signings the last 2 years have been just that (except for McNabb).
There are excellent players available this year in free agency that can upgrade needed spots on our team immediately. I see the team paying hard for offensive line personnel, a #1 wide receiver, and safety/cornerback in free agency. If we get even 2 of these 3 needs locked up, trading draft picks for a franchise QB is both possible and worth it.
