Executive Vice President/Head Coach Mike Shanahan

On if practice was shortened today:
“We did everything today. The only thing we really eliminated was the five-minute individual drills. We just started a little bit earlier.”

On tight end Chris Cooley’s injury:
“He’s still questionable.”

On safety LaRon Landry’s playing status:
“LaRon’s out. He did not practice today.”

On if he’s pleased with what the team has been able to accomplish going into the game:
“We’re looking forward to finally playing a game. When you go through the practices and the preseason games, you’re looking forward to actually playing a game. We’re playing a very good football team that’s been very successful. It’s a special day, 9/11, [I’m] looking forward to the matchup.”

On safety DeJon Gomes:
“He’s looked pretty good. We feel good about him. He can play both the strong safety and the free safety position. He has a lot of speed and upside. He’s still a rookie, but I think he’s handling everything and he’s very sharp.”

On linebacker Ryan Kerrigan’s progression during the shortened offseason:
“We put a lot of pressure on the outside linebacker position. It’s probably the toughest position to play because we have strong-side, weak-side and you have to know your run fits, your pass drops and different combinations of different coverages. We put a lot of pressure on him, especially coming from a defensive end position. He’s handling it well and he’s very bright and conscientious. He works at everything he does and he’s picked it up pretty well.”

On measuring players’ aptitude for changing positions before the draft:
“You always do that. You always take a look at how quick someone is mentally. Hopefully, they pick things up and [Ryan] has picked things up quickly throughout his collegiate career.”

On the team’s youth:
“Any time you have young players, you’re hoping that they don’t make [mental] mistakes. You’re preparing them during the week and trying to get them ready to play. You don’t want to put too much pressure on them so they don’t make those mistakes. We do expect them to know what they’re doing both on offense, defense and special teams. We’re realistic enough to know there are mistakes that are going to be made.”

On the keys to safety Reed Doughty playing in the NFL for a while:
“[Reed] will have longevity because of the way he prepares and works. He plays the strong safety and the free safety position and special teams. [He’s] very conscientious and a student of the game. He prepares for each game like he’s preparing for a Super Bowl. That’s why he’s been successful here and why he’ll be successful anywhere even after football.”
