Heady days ... can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting a "Redskins Hire_____" announcement.
Turner headed to Redskins
By Jeff Legwold Comments
Broncos running backs coach Bobby Turner, who has been with the team since 1995, has accepted an offer with the Washington Redskins.
Turner will be an associate head coach on Mike Shanahan’s staff in Washington. Turner came to Denver when Shanahan was hired as Broncos head coach in '95.
The Broncos initially denied the Redskins permission to speak to Turner, but opted to let Turner interview when Shanahan came back with a second request that included a promotion to associate head coach.
It puts Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, with Rick Dennison’s departure this week, in the position of replacing the two assistant coaches have oversaw the Broncos’ dominant run game in Shanahan’s 14 seasons. McDaniels would like to move to a more power-oriented attack rather than the zone run scheme, which calls for smaller, quicker offensive linemen.
In Turner’s tenure with the Broncos Terrell Davis went from sixth-round draft pick to NFL MVP while Davis, Olandis Gary, Clinton Portis, Rueben Droughns, Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell all had at least one 1,000-yard rushing season.
The Broncos have not had a 1,000-yard rusher since Bell, in 2006.
