I agree that with Guice still limited and draft pick Bryce Love on PUP the Redskins need depth at RB to start the season.

But from what I have seen Perine and Marshall are not the answer.

We may need to sign a player that ends up in final cuts from another team to be the #3 tailback.

Perine has been here for three years and has never been able to establish himself as a guy who can be productive consistently at this level.

He lacks the speed and elusiveness to make the first guy miss.

Marshall like Colt McCoy can't stay healthy for more than 2 or 3 games.

Time to move on from these guys, we have seen this movie before.
I think you guys have referenced this before, and it's one of my biggest criticisms of this FO. We seem woefully disinclined to move on from guys who we draft who don't pan out. Whether it's LeRibeus, Doctson, Perine - we just hold onto them for years and years despite no evidence they are ever going to suddenly start producing and proving they warranted where they were picked.

This is one of the core differences between franchises like ours, and more successful teams like New England.

In New England, you produce, or your ass will be on the sidewalk so fast it will make your head spin. There just doesn't seem to be anywhere near that culture here in DC. So despite outplaying guys like Perine and Marshall, we'll let promising 'gamers' go and retain them. And they'll continue to inspire yawns with below average production.

What's ironic is that Gruden seems better able to spot defensive talent in the draft lobbying for guys like Ioannidis and Nicholson while picks like Perine, Grant, Doctson and others fizzle out.

Speaking of our recent defensive picks, Stroman was graded as the best skin vs the bengals fwiw. I have no clue how they grade players btw, but gotta give the FO atleast some props for the later round defensive backs taken.

Moreland and Strohman look like late rounders that may make an NFL career, but it looks like Adonis Alexander may not. He got hurt and may end up on IR which would give him another year to prepare for the league.

Tidbits from Gruden's presser today:

- Jay and Trent have spoken. Wouldn't elaborate but Jay's body language didn't ooze positivity.

- Wilson has a significant ankle sprain, which is a shame since he seems to be a natural on kick returns. Skins have no obvious great options on returns and that needs to be resolved soon.

- Guice is improving but didn't sound like we'll be seeing him any time soon.

- Gruden basically made excuses for Perine. 'We need to get him better looks'. Never mind that all of the other RBs seem to be able to find an occasional hole...

When does it ever LOL!

I think it's high time for the Samaje Gruden experiment to end. Get him better looks? Does he need hair product?

Rewatching preseason game 2 thoughts...

- Our DL is scary physical
- Keenum is smart. Takes what is there and I think we can count on him not to make many bad decisions.
- Robert Davis is really showing me something.
- What in God's name is going on with our kicking game? Shanked field goals, multiple bad snaps/holds on extra points, etc...?
- Haskins has really good pocket awareness. Saw him make small moves in the pocket to buy time multiple times.
- Starting defense looked good - swarming to the ball like we haven't seen in quite awhile.
- I hope Guice is a healthy return soon and as good as advertised, because we currently have no #2 RB.

Hoping he spoke to Trent to tell him good luck in Houston because Sybil got us Clowney in exchange for him.

Perine has the same 'Snyder dossier' handed down by Lava, Typo, Leribus, etc.....

Running back right now may be one of our most exposed positions given Guice's status.

If Peterson were to go down with an injury this team would be depending upon Perine and Chris Thompson AGAIN.

That's not where we want to be in terms of an every down back.

Some teams are 3 deep at tailback and we can't seem to bring in any players to settle this position down.

Health at RB has been an issue for years. Rob Kelley, Guice, Thompson, Marshall, etc.

I take it there's zero chance that Haskins gets the 1st quarter on Thursday, was kinda hoping they'd start him to see how he handles it all.

I'm equally curious to see what the young man can do with a full starting supporting cast around him. But it is looking more and more like Gruden will go with Keenum to start the season. They brought the guy here for a reason, likely knowing they'd have a rookie QB in the fold but needing someone with vet experience to serve as a bridge, particularly given they haven't been able to count on McCoy.

If we were to see Haskins with the first teamers, that would signal that there's still a chance they go with him as starter to begin the season. I don't see it happening as he still looks pretty raw at times.

Keenum was brought here to be a bridge quarterback with the Smith injury and that is what IMO he is going to be in 2019. We didn't know that the team was going to draft Haskins in Round 1 when Keenum was signed, but it was clear then that Colt was having problems coming back from a prior injury and couldn't be counted on.

To me there is no rush to get Haskins out there. The left side of the OL needs to settle down and we need to get at least a few games in the books where the line starts to solidify and we get a starting 5 that are working together before we put Haskins in the lineup.

It may not be popular to voice the opinion, but regardless of who starts the season it is probable that the Redskins will be 0-2 after a road game in Philly on national TV and an early matchup against Dallas.

With the line issues still working towards resolution and Keenum being the most mobile of the 3 quarterbacks, it only makes sense to start him early on.

And here's a thing ... I think Keenum has looked damn good.

I've gone back and rewatched all of his series, and he's been on-time, accurate and professional. Take away the blatant drops (looking at you, Mr. Quick) and questionable offense PI call on Sprinkle that negated the 4th-down TD pass conversion against Cinci, and I'm not sure there's really much of a conversation about who should start week one.

I've said since the draft I thought Keenum should start, and Haskins takes the field this year only if and when Keenum has shown he can't do the job. Keenum's done just the opposite--I think he's not getting enough credit for running the show pretty much exactly like I think Jay wants.

Haskins as had moments that promise a bright future, but also shown he's a raw rookie--and that's going against preseason defenses and schemes not calculated specifically to mess with his head.

Yeah, I want to see that The Kid can do too. I think he has a chance to be really good here for a long time. But I also want the team to have it's best chance to compete for a playoff spot in 2019, and with a promising defense and potential for a decent ball-control running/play action offense, solid pro QB play like Keenum has been showing so far is to me clearly the way go.

and potential for a decent ball-control running/play action offense,
This an interesting bit from your statement Om...

I have been reading articles and such from around the media. One I was reading was about how Matt LaFleur is trying to revolutionize GB's passing game by instituting Play Action and having Rodgers under center more. Something he's not done much the last few years for one reason or another. Then another article about Kirk and Minnesota and how they're trying to incorporate stuff from Gary Kubiak's offenses and make it more PA orientated. Obviously we're seeing a movement in that direction lately from younger coaches like McVay in LA etc.

Jay has always run a WC offense... so do you think we'll see more Play Action this year? Do we think if we do that will be Kevin O'Connells influence?

It's a bit amazing to me this team could finish 7-9 and for an offense that has been less than productive bring back the same starters except at qb, LT and LG.

And the change at LT is due to Trent's decision making to move on not the teams.

But it's basically the same set of runners, similar starting 3 at wide receiver and same top 3 at TE.

I realize Live is a redshirt fro 2019 at RB but you would think we would bring in some security for the qbs with a proven veteran receiver, a TE that can block as well as catch and a runner stronger than Perine in case Peterson goes down as depth with Guice still iffy.

Depending upon Reed, Thompson, Richardson, etc again despite their injury histories is a bit scary.

I take it the o-line is looking decent, and who's in at LT?

Also, has Mclaurin been in?

The OL has looked terrible in pass pro. Keenum got bullrushed and hit repeatedly throughout the first half. They looked solid on run blocking, even Flowers and Penn were steamrolling guys. But we got eaten alive in pass pro.

McLaurin almost had a TD catch but was interfered with. They really are protecting him, at least so far. Cam Sims had a big catch as did Jeremy Sprinkle. Jordan Reed, who 'runs great routes', dropped a dime from Keenum that would've gone a long way and killed a drive, and then about got himself concussed again.

They ran the hell out of Guice who looked great. They even had him diving in from the 1 yd line, a TD if Flowers doesn't find a way to get a holding call on the 1 yd line.

I would think the pass pro will get better with communication on the left side. Glad to see Jay actually running the damn ball as well, even though he'll abandon it during the regular season.

I take it AP is sitting out?

Also seems special teams is MUCH better too
