Random Commanders Thoughts

How much value does Young really have is my main question? I don't think we will get as much out of a trade for him as we would like.

Just my two cents.

The problem is, Payne has been playing well for years. Maybe they wanted to see more from him to justify the contract he was going to ask for, but his ability was never in doubt.

Young is in a pretty different situation. He has shown a handful of times - all pretty early on - that he could be the guy they thought they were drafting at #2. He hasn’t proven he is going to be an impact player at his position. But I’m guessing he and his agent are going to want a ton of money despite that and he’s got just one season to prove he’s anywhere near worth big money. What kind of season does he have to have to convince them? I’d say anything short of a pro bowl worthy season isn’t going to be enough for them to sign a second contract.

I’d take a late 2nd or early third for him and wouldn’t look back. If we can get a proven player to help us that would be fine too. I know some are sentimental and hate that idea but this team needs to make hard decisions and move forward.

I have entertained not drinking beer at night. But, after a while and a certain amount of saying it and never doing it my wife ignores me.

I'm sure we have thought of it and are still thinking of it. I just don't believe the mediots have any inside info. They're just looking for clicks

In the position he plays, to get the money he and his agent are going to want after this season, he is going to have to play like the second coming of Reggie White.

Not Pro Bowl, he needs to be 1st team All-Pro and be in the discussion for DPOY.

Is that a lot? Yes. But he is going to want Top 5 money in the spring and at this point that is going to be based solely on his being picked #2 overall 3 years ago and his being DROY.

If we are going to do that to our cap, it has to be for a player who can wreck a gameplan all by himself.

For me Chase Young appears to be more interested in his brand and celebrity than his sport. Either he absolutely balls out or he can ball on somewhere else.

For as much as Daron Payne was dragged here and elsewhere prior to his new deal, he did everything right through the entire process and clearly wants to continue to be a productive player and teammate here. First and foremost he is a football player first. That matters.

Yeah - it appears most of us were wrong about Payne, so possible we’re being excessively harsh on Young as well. I think the incident with Jon Allen soured a lot of us on Payne to an extent, although it’s clear now it was just a dust up between friends rather than some kind of defining moment.

Young also carries the burden of being the #2 pick in the draft and had bad luck getting injured in just his 2nd season. Neither of those are his fault. But not following the lead of guys like Allen and McLaurin when it comes to doing everything in his power to be a team guy (like attending non-mandatory events) has damaged his rep. That and not playing at the level expected and seemingly not having earned the absolute trust of his coaches…

I can't blame any professional athlete for being about their brand. They have a very short time to make the money that will most likely last the rest of their lives. Contracts and endorsements are most likely it since getting in to broadcasting is very rare.

But, his play has been inconsistent and that's what hurts him the most. When he's healthy he is very good. But, he needs to learn a new move besides the bull rush. Orakpo had the same issue.

His start to season #2 was bad. And he was at his healthiest. That stretch of games where he didn’t even look like he knew where he was supposed to be on any given play, that’s when I started wondering if he would turn out to be a blown pick.

Then there was the last quarter of the 1st season where he looked like a budding star … so I’m not sure how you mesh those 2 things - which guy is he?

My gut feeling is that after his rookie year, DCs figured out how to attack/neutralize him, or maybe he didn’t put in the work in the off-season to improve, but who the hell knows?

Our entire defense was hurt or hurting that season if I recall. Sweat with his jaw, Allen was hurt, too. He may not have been great, but nobody was on that line.

Agreed. But a #2 pick has to be able to lift a D that is struggling, not be one of the reasons for it. We’ll see if he can resurrect his career this season.

I wish Serv still came on this site.

I'd ask him "how many top 5 players have struggled before becoming good?" and he'd have ten different graphs and facts up before my coffee was done.

Yeah, no idea where he went or why? He was great.

Good listen with Galdi

So, this Steelers insider says the Steelers are very interested in trading for Chase Young and that he’s hearing this from team officials. So it’s not just the typical click bait.

I would never for a second criticize an athlete for being committed to their ‘brand’ as long as they produce at a similar level on the job. Outstanding performance in their chosen field is the greatest way to protect and secure those benefits long term.

Hopefully Chase Young gets that and becomes the player that the football world expected. We’ll see but I’m not betting on it.

(For the record- if I’m Ron Rivera I’m playing it out, not even a little bit concerned with what 2024 brings.)

I think this is one of those manufactured stories Mike was referencing.

Most intriguing thing I've heard about Chase Young so far this offseason is he was putting in work with Von Miller. If there was one guy I would have wanted him to BE working out with--if it wasn't going to be with the team--it would be Von Miller, a legit pro who maxed out his talent with effort both on and off the field.

If Chase shows up in camp and preseason and still doesn't look like he has more than one or two pass-rush moves, still finds himself lost in space as often he is doing his job, still talks more with his mouth than his game, I'll know his time with Miller was for show and not an indicator he has committed to learning his craft.

I've been more patient with Chase than many, but sitting here today I'm thinking my Rubicon on the guy is probably 1-2 games into the regular season.

Kareem Hunt is entering his 7th NFL season. That’s pretty old for an NFL RB. Folks are saying EB wants him but EB hasn’t seen Hunt up close and personal in 5 seasons since he joined the Browns. And do we even need a RB?! I would be beyond pissed if we gave up picks for a guy like Hunt.

As far as the domestic abuse stuff, the TMZ video was ugly stuff but the actual ‘violence’ is overblown as it’s mostly scuffling and a half-assed kick. No excuse for any of it, but there are levels/degrees to this kind of stuff and imho the incident was a bit overhyped. He got an 8 game suspension for the below incident.

Obviously he is a free agent, duh - having my 2nd cup of coffee now - so we aren’t giving up anything to get him. I’m just not sure we need him at his age. If they pull the trigger, I’ll grudgingly get on board I guess.

This morning on Google news

"Saints trade candidate for Young?" SI
"Labriola doesn't believe the Steelers rumors for Young" Steelers depot
"Seahawks trade for young?" SI again

I do believe John is right and we are looking to see if any offers come that are worth listening to. But. This is now 2 conferences and 2 different divisions in one of those conferences lol
