TEAM-RECORD FIVE PRIME-TIME GAMES
Home opener on Monday Night Football, Shanahan’s return to Denver headline 2013 slate
LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The National Football League announced its 2013 regular season schedule tonight, and the Washington Redskins’ schedule features a team-record five national television appearances beginning at 7:10 p.m. ET on Monday, Sept. 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. The five prime-time games snap the Redskins’ previous team record of four, previously set in six seasons including most recently in 2008.
The season will be one of many parallels for Executive Vice President/Head Coach Mike Shanahan. This season, Shanahan will face all three of the other professional teams for which he has coached – the Denver Broncos (1984-87, 1989-91, 1995-2008), the Oakland Raiders (1988-89) and the San Francisco 49ers (1992-94). In addition, every opponent Shanahan has faced in the Super Bowl is represented on the 2013 schedule, including the New York Giants (1986 season), Redskins (1987), 49ers (1989), San Diego Chargers (1994), Green Bay Packers (1997) and Atlanta Falcons (1998).
After kicking off the 2013 campaign against the Eagles on Sept. 9, the Redskins hit the road to face the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 15. The Redskins will seek to earn their first win at Lambeau Field since 1988 in a game scheduled to air on FOX at 1 p.m. ET.
The Redskins return home in Week 3 to host the Detroit Lions on Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. ET on FOX, a game in which Washington will attempt to extend a home winning streak against the Lions that dates back to 1939. A week later, the team will travel to face the Oakland Raiders at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sept. 29 on FOX.
Washington will have a bye in Week 5, marking the second time in three seasons (2011 and 2013) the Redskins will break after four games. After the bye, the Redskins will face the Dallas Cowboys in a nationally-televised road tilt on Oct. 13 on NBC’s Sunday Night Football at 8:30 p.m. ET.
A week later on Oct. 20, the Redskins will host the Chicago Bears at FedExField in a 1 p.m. ET game on FOX. The following week, the Redskins will travel for a 4:25 p.m. ET game against the Denver Broncos on Oct. 27, as FOX will air Shanahan’s return to the city in which he became the fifth head coach in NFL history to win back-to-back Super Bowl titles.
After facing the San Diego Chargers in a 1 p.m. ET game on CBS on Nov. 3, the Redskins will quickly turn around for a Thursday night game against the Minnesota Vikings at 8:20 p.m. ET on NFL Network on Nov. 7. The Redskins have faced the Vikings in each of Shanahan’s previous three seasons in Washington, including a 38-26 win against Minnesota at FedExField last season.
On Nov. 17, the Redskins will face the Eagles at 1 p.m. ET on FOX and, after a 27-20 road win against the Eagles last season, Washington will seek to earn wins in Philadelphia in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2007-08. A week later, the Redskins will host the San Francisco 49ers on ESPN’s Monday Night Football on Nov. 25 in a battle of reigning division champions. The Monday night game kicks off the Redskins’ first three-game homestand since 2006.
The Redskins will host the New York Giants for an 8:30 p.m. ET game on NBC on Dec. 1 the following week. Washington will attempt to earn its third consecutive home victory against the Giants, whom the Redskins beat in the season opener of the 2011 season and in a 17-16 Monday night win in December 2012. The Redskins conclude the homestand with a 1 p.m. ET game against the Kansas City Chiefs on CBS on Dec. 8.
After traveling to face the Atlanta Falcons at 1 p.m. ET on FOX on Dec. 15, Washington will face divisional opponents in consecutive weeks for the first time all season in Weeks 16 and 17. At 1 p.m. ET on Dec. 22, the Redskins will host the Cowboys in a rematch of the teams’ memorable Week 17 division title fight from a season ago. One week later on Dec. 29, the Redskins will conclude the 2013 regular season against the Giants at MetLife Stadium, site of Super Bowl XLVIII.
NOTES ON THE REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE:
Vs. Philadelphia Eagles
• The Redskins open the season against the Eagles on Monday Night Football, marking the first time the Redskins will open a season on Monday night since 2006.
• This will be the 10th time in team history that the Redskins will open the season on Monday Night Football since the program’s inception in 1970.
• This will be the second time in the Shanahan era that the Redskins have opened the season in prime time and the first since a 13-7 home win against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football in 2010.
• The Redskins are 24-19 in season openers since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. A win would be Washington's fourth consecutive season-opening win and would represent the first time the Redskins had won four straight openers since 2002-05.
• Head Coach Mike Shanahan holds a 15-4 record in season openers as a head coach. His 15 season-opening victories lead the NFL among active head coaches, and with one more victory, he will tie Tom Landry for most season-opening victories by a head coach since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger (16).
• Shanahan is 3-0 in season openers with the Redskins. With a win in the 2013 season opener, Shanahan would become only the second coach in team history to win his first four season openers with the Redskins, joining George Allen, who won his first six season openers from 1971-76.
• The Redskins are 41-34-3 in regular season home games against the Eagles all-time.
@ Green Bay Packers
• The Redskins won the last matchup between the two teams, earning a 16-13 overtime victory against the eventual Super Bowl champion Packers at FedExField on Oct. 10, 2010.
• The Redskins will be playing their first regular season game in Green Bay since Oct. 14, 2007.
• The Redskins are seeking their first road win in Green Bay since defeating the Packers, 20-17, on Oct. 23, 1988.
• Shanahan is 3-3 all-time against the Packers, including a 31-24 victory with the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII.
Vs. Detroit Lions
• Including postseason play, the Redskins have won 21 consecutive home games against the Lions dating back to Nov. 26, 1939. The Redskins are 21-2 all-time at home against the Lions, with their last home loss coming on Oct. 13, 1935 at Fenway Park as the Boston Redskins.
• Including postseason play, the Redskins lead their all-time series against the Lions, 30-12.
• The Redskins will host the Lions at FedExField for the first time since recording a 34-3 victory on Oct. 7, 2007.
• The Redskins have scored 27 or more points in 10 of the 13 last home games held against the Lions.
@ Oakland Raiders
• The Redskins will be playing in Oakland for the first time recording a 34-13 win against the Raiders on Dec. 13, 2009, a game in which then-rookie Brian Orakpo registered a team-record-tying four sacks.
• The Redskins have not lost to the Raiders on the road since Oct. 29, 1989. The teams have only played in California twice in the last 20 years, with the Redskins winning those games during the 1998 and 2009 seasons.
• Shanahan is 21-7 all-time against the Raiders with a 10-4 record in games played in California.
@ Dallas Cowboys
• The Redskins face the Cowboys in Week 6 following a bye week in Week 5. Since bye weeks were instituted in 1990, the Redskins are 12-12 in games following bye weeks. Shanahan is currently 11-6 in games following bye weeks.

Vs. San Diego Chargers
• The Redskins are 6-3 all-time against the Chargers, including a 4-1 record in games played at home.
• Of the nine games contested between the two teams, the Redskins won the first six games in the series before the Chargers’ current three-game winning streak.
• The Redskins are seeking their first victory against the Chargers since defeating San Diego, 24-20, at FedExField on Dec. 6, 1998.

• Shanahan would become the first Redskins head coach to win in Philadelphia in consecutive years since Joe Gibbs in 1988-89.
Vs. San Francisco 49ers
• The winner will take a series edge in games played in Washington, as the Redskins are currently 7-7 in home games against the 49ers including postseason play.
• A win would be the Redskins’ first against San Francisco since registering a 52-17 home victory on Oct. 23, 2005.
• Shanahan holds a 3-3 record when facing the 49ers, the franchise for which he served as Offensive Coordinator from 1992-94, including the franchise’s Super Bowl-winning team in 1994.
Vs. New York Giants
• With home wins against the Giants in 2011 and 2012, the Redskins are seeking their first three-game home winning streak against the Giants since a four-game winning streak from 1982-85.
• Two of the last three home games between the Redskins and Giants at FedExField have been decided by three points or less.
• The game is the Redskins’ fifth nationally-televised game on the schedule, establishing a new team record for a single season. The Redskins have previously appeared on national television four times in a season on six previous occasions, the last in 2008.

• The Redskins will be seeking their first win against the Chiefs since earning a 27-12 home victory on Sept. 18, 1983.
• A Redskins win would be the team’s second win against the Chiefs all-time and would snap a five-game losing streak to the Chiefs.
• The game concludes Washington’s first three-game homestand since Weeks 12-14 of the 2006 season.
• Shanahan is 16-15 all-time against the Chiefs, including a 12-3 record in games played at home.

• The Redskins are seeking their first victory against the Falcons since recording a 33-31 road win at the Georgia Dome on Sept. 14, 2003.
• The Redskins are 15-7-1 all-time against the Falcons, including postseason games.
• The Redskins are 5-4-1 all-time in regular season road games against Atlanta.
• Shanahan is 4-3 all-time against Atlanta, including a 34-19 win in Super Bowl XXXIII during his time with the Denver Broncos.
Vs. Dallas Cowboys
• The Redskins swept the Cowboys last season, the team’s first sweep of the Cowboys since 2005. A sweep of the Cowboys in 2013 would represent the first time in team history the Redskins had swept the Cowboys in consecutive seasons.
• Including postseason play, the Redskins’ all-time home record against the Cowboys stands at 28-27.

• The Redskins will face the Giants in their season finale for the second time in three seasons (2011 and 2013).
• This matchup between the Redskins and Giants will be the second of the season and the 164th between the teams all-time, including postseason play. The Giants are the Redskins’ most common opponent.
