President Trump Ripped By ESPN's Stephen A. Smith Over Washington 'Redskins' Debate originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Washington Commanders need a new stadium. That much is clear. While many point to a potential deal to rebuild on the old RFK Stadium site, one politician wants one concession given before he signs off on any agreement.

President Donald Trump has been quite vocal in making his point that he wants the Commanders to go back to the organization's old "Redskins" moniker and logo. The entire brand was changed ahead of the 2020 season amidst demands from sponsors and politicians to change the nearly 100-year-old name.

Now, President Trump wants to bring the old brand back. He seems willing to exert political pressure before the Commanders finish building a new stadium.

Trump's comments have set off a pretty wide debate across the country. On ESPN's latest episode of First Take, Stephen A. Smith criticized the President for trying to deflect on some of the bigger issues he is facing with this current stand-off between the Commanders.

“I think it’s the president being petty. I think it’s him being evasive,” Smith said, clearly believing that the Jeffrey Epstein files (regarding sex trafficking and which powerful names might've been involved) are Trump's motivation for bringing up other topics. “Because the reality is, no matter how good he wants people to believe things are with the ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ and other things … There are millions of people in the U.S. who are not happy with what he’s doing.”

Washington's name change has been a hotly contested debate over the last few seasons. New owner Josh Harris has already maintained the belief that the organization would not go back to their "Redskins" brand ever again.

Could pressure from Trump push the Commanders back to their old roots?

Time will tell. At the very least, the debate over the Commanders isn't ending anytime soon.
