Payne's Trade Value

Daron Payne has been franchise tagged with the non-exclusive tag. That means that other teams can negotiate with him and, for the low low price of 2 first-round draft picks, even sign him away from us. There is also the possibility of a team working out a deal with Payne and negotiating less compensation with Washington.

I can't see any team giving up 2 1st-round picks outright for Payne. Granted, this is the NFL and teams have been known to do silly things but I still don't see it.

With that in mind, and assuming Washington can't work out their own LTD with Payne, what would you take as compensation for Payne from another team?

- I started to include a poll for this but very quickly realized that the options are limitless so give me your thoughts below.

It does allow Payne to negotiate a deal ahead of a trade package, even if its' not the 2 first round picks. For the record I would be FLOORED if we got 2 first round picks for him, and I would applaud the move massively.

IMHO, the FLOOR has to be a 2023 3rd round pick.. if someone wants to call me with a 3rd in a later year, or something lower, it's a non-starter.

I would say that I start with a 1st round pick, if Payne is going to have the luxury of negotiating a long term deal with that team. The only reason Payne is not viewed as a 1st round talent DT, would be the fact that you don't have him long term. Allowing the extension to be worked out before the compensation removes that cost cut. I would probably accept a 2nd round pick, but my goal would be a 1st as the anchor, then maybe a later round pick as a throw in.

While it's no secret his sack number was almost 3x what it was last year, all the rest of the stats look identical.

Solo tackles
Stuffs

He had a career sack year, and I don't doubt is has to do with his contract. But, do DTs really account for that many sacks every year?

Sacks:
Allen had 7.5
Payne had 11.5
Chris Jones 15.5 but usually averages around 8
Cam Heyward 10.5

Tackles:
Cam Heyward 74
Chris Jones 44
Payne 64
Allen 65

He's right up there with some of the best in the league by stats. He's been solid his entire contract and only gone above and beyond on one stat. If we offered Allen $100 mil, Payne is right there to me.

To me, edge rushers are more expendable than a solid DT. Not to say I don't want to keep Sweat, but the interior pressure and run stopping means 10x to me than a guy coming off the edge flushing a QB out.

I still believe that Payne was misused, or at least used differently, by Sam Mills.

I’m uncomfortable with criticisms aimed at his character. They may end up being valid ones, they may also not. His cost may or may not be worth his future performance. Time will tell. But I don’t think he is the reincarnation of Albert Haynesworth.

But I could, of course, be wrong.

Per John Kiem on his podcast posted last night, the team turned down a 2nd round pick for Payne last year.

The information came from the team that made the offer, not someone within the Washington organization.

obviously it matters who was offering, like if it was anybody within the division, no thanks...

but if it wasnt... my only response is.. Why?

Well, if they turned it down hoping they could get more this offseason, Payne did his part. 1 less year of control may mitigate that exceptional season though.

I would have taken a 2nd last year. Payne's numbers up to that point had been average so a 2nd would have been fine.

Not sure I'd take just a 2nd now though. Not after a Pro Bowl year.

I strongly disagree with average. He is a solid DT who has been dealing with teammates being injured and a dysfunctional coach. His stats look solid since he got here.
