Jared Veldheer OT Hillsdale http://www.usatoday.com/sports/foot...all-schools-arthur-moats-jared-veldheer_N.htm
By Tom Pedulla, USA TODAY
Top NFL teams search here, there and everywhere for talent. Surprisingly often, they find it in players who never got to strut their stuff collegiately on national television.
Recent success stories have made front offices increasingly aware of how important small schools can be in shaping their rosters. Think of what has occurred at the wide receiver position alone.
Marques Colston (seventh round, Hofstra, 2006) emerged as the leading target for Drew Brees and the eventual Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints. Pierre Garcon (sixth round, Mount Union, 2008) developed into a key target for Peyton Manning and the AFC champion Indianapolis Colts.
USA TODAY looks at small school players who will be available in the April 22-24 draft and have a shot at playing big in the NFL:
T Jared Veldheer
Ht.: 6-8 Wt.: 312
School: Hillsdale College
Hometown: Grand Rapids, Mich.
Key statistic: Never allowed a sack
Why he can make the jump: Has size, agility and dedication to succeed. Helped Chargers produce a 1,000-yard rusher each of his four seasons as a starter. Displayed durability in starting all 46 games. Showed strength in bench-pressing as much as 415 pounds. Served as co-captain each of last two seasons with Hillsdale gaining first Division II playoff berth in 2009.
Why he can't: Needs to show more explosion off the line of scrimmage. Desire to impose his will on defenders has been questioned. After succeeding against smaller opponents, will find it's a very different game when he no longer has a massive size advantage.
Projected round: Third
Last player drafted from Hillsdale: DB Nate Johnson, seventh round, Pittsburgh Steelers, 1980
Coach's quote: "He absolutely left no stone unturned when he came here to develop himself mentally and physically. A to Z, he did everything possible." —Keith Otterbein, head coach at Hillsdale
Draft expert: "He's a great athlete who worked out extremely well at the combine. He's someone offensive line coaches can build with." —Michael Lombardi, NFL Network draft analyst

Sam Young OT Notre Dame"20 comments
[Remember to check the '2010 NFL Draft' section for all stories relating to the draft.]
How can we do this lengthy series of Daily NFL Draft Prospect Profiles and not once feature a player from Notre Dame? Can't do it, so today we fix that.
Of course, the Giants have no interest in quarterback Jimmy Clausen. And I doubt seriously we will see Golden Tate in a Giants uniform.
So, that leaves us with Sam Young, the mammoth (6-foot-8, 320-pound) right tackle. Young is a guy who started for four years at Notre Dame, but like most things connected to Fighting Irish football these days never quite lived up to what people thought he would become.
He is, however, a Notre Dame lineman and talented ND linemen always seem to find their way into the NFL. So, let's take a closer look.
"
Great height and bulk with a huge frame ... Long arms ... Good natural strength ... Is capable of getting a big push in the run game ... Not a great athlete ... Isn't very quick or agile ... Has heavy feet ... Really struggles with speed ... Can only play one position.
Will likely be relegated to right tackle at the next level --- Never quite lived up to all the hype but is a battle-tested veteran with rare size and solid intangibles --- Didn't develop into the top prospect some envisioned early in his career but has the ability to be a serviceable pro and perhaps more in the right situation.
From the National Football Post.
Plays with a mean streak in the run game. He showcases good overall athleticism for a guy his size when asked to slide-block and get out in space. He exhibits the pop to create some movement off the ball. Young works hard to finish blocks but struggles to consistently keep his base down through the play ... Young gets a bit heavy-footed when asked to slide on contact and struggles to mirror his man. He allows defenders to easily sidestep and disengage from his block when they want to get physical and is only average when asked to reach the edge.
NFLDraftScout after watching Young at the Senior Bowl.

Selvish Capers, OT, West Virginia
http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/profile_display.cfm?prospect_id=2170
Selvish Capers started his collegiate career at West Virginia as a tight end. He played there as a redshirt freshman in 2006 in a limited capacity. During the off-season (heading into the 2007 campaign), Capers was moved to the offensive line. Capers started that season as a back up, but by the middle of the season he secured the starting position at right tackle and has been there ever since. Capers has helped pave the way for some great rushing offenses. In 2006, the Mountaineers ranked third in the nation in rushing offense. In 2008 the team ranked 15th in the nation. Capers deserves a lot of credit for those impressive numbers.
Capers has a little room to put on more weight and at this point he is better suited as a right tackle rather than a left tackle; that will move him down most draft boards. Capers is certainly a capable player who has great footwork, yet his best asset is his ability to stay healthy. Capers has been a starter since the 2007 season and has not missed a game since.
Capers is not one of the top linemen in this class, but he could develop into a quality NFL player sooner or later, and that should make him worth a mid or late round selection.
1/24 Update: Capers finished the 2009 season relatively strong and that has led to some NFL scouts taking notice. Capers is still not one of the best offensive tackles around, but he has been invited to the NFL Combine and he can certainly work his way up into the second round with a good showing in Indianapolis. Mostly he needs to show the NFL that he can be a consistent pass blocker since he played college ball on a team that loved to run the ball.
4/10 Update: Unfortunately for Capers, he has not proven to be a consistent pass blocker. There is no doubt he has quick feet and a surprising amount of athleticism for a player his size, but offensive tackles have to block. A zone blocking scheme will cover up some of his short comings, but he is probably a couple years away from seriously contributing to an NFL team. However, he does have a high ceiling and somebody should be willing to take a chance on him around the fourth round.

Matt Tennant C Boston College
Height: 6-4⅝ | Weight: 300 | 40-Time: 5.16 "
http://www.draftcountdown.com/ScoutingReports/C/Matt-Tennant.php
Strengths:
Smart with good awareness --- Excellent technician with a sound grasp of positioning and angles --- Above average athleticism --- Quick and agile --- Good mobility --- Uses his hands well --- Nice frame with room to get bigger --- Finishes his blocks --- Tough --- Plays with a nasty demeanor --- Competitive --- Durable --- A lot of experience against top competition --- Hard worker --- Leader --- Excellent program pedigree.
Weaknesses:
Does not have the ideal bulk that you look for --- Not overly strong or powerful --- Gets pushed back --- Has trouble sustaining and will fall off blocks --- Won't get huge push in run game --- Plays too high at times.

Notes:
Was a three-year starter for the Eagles --- Named 2nd Team All-ACC in 2009 --- Voted a team captain as a senior --- Was a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, given to the nation's top center, in 2009 --- Will attempt to follow in the footsteps of former BC pivots Tom Nalen, Damien Woody and Dan Koppen, who all found great success in the NFL --- The type who does everything well but nothing great --- Not flashy but has the ability to compete for a starting job at the next level.

2009 Senior Bowl Invite…2009 East-West Shrine Invite…2008: Ruled academically ineligible for 2008, but practiced with the team while redshirting. 2007: He moved from fullback to guard prior to the season and played in all 13 games with 12 starts (did not start against Chattanooga). Earned second-team All-SEC honors from the league’s coaches. He cleared the way for two All-American running backs – Doak Walker Award winner and Heisman Trophy runner-up Darren McFadden, who led the SEC and ranked fourth in the nation in rushing (140.8), and Felix Jones, who ranked fifth in the SEC and No. 43 in the country (89.4). His overall grade for the year was 83.4, including a grade of 96.3 on passing plays. His 54 knockdown blocks were third only to Nate Garner’s 62 and Jonathan Luigs’ 55. In the South Carolina game, he recorded 14 knockdown blocks while earning an 84 percent run block grade, a 100 percent pass block grade and a total grade of 86 percent. He blocked the way for Arkansas’ 650 yards of offense, including 542 yards on the ground, and four rushing TDs, and was named the SEC’s Offensive Lineman of the Week. 2006: Moved to fullback and was one of the Hogs’ most effective blockers out of the backfield and on special teams. He appeared in all 14 games logging time as a blocking back and on the kickoff return and PAT/field goal units. He helped clear the way for a pair of 1,000-yard rushers (Darren McFadden and Felix Jones) and the 2006 Doak Walker Award winner (McFadden). Perhaps his best play of the season came on a kickoff return when he made the final block to spring Jones for a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Ole Miss. He earned one rushing attempt on the season and gained a yard against Southeast Missouri State. 2005: He played in the last nine games for the Razorbacks as a member of the kickoff return team and a reserve tight end and offensive guard. He played 32 snaps, carding a grade of 81 percent.

Draft Scout Mitch Petrus News

03/28/10 - TOP RATED NFL DRAFT SCOUT OFFENSIVE GUARDS: Mitch Petrus, Arkansas, 6-3, 310, 3-4: Keeping track of Petrus on and off the field was a significant chore. He was originally a walk-on tight end, then switched to offensive guard, then fullback and back to guard in 2007. Oh, and his first name is really Jonathan, but he goes by the short version of Mitchell, his middle name. When he finally settled in at guard, Petrus earned second-team all-SEC honors. But just when it seemed he'd found his way, Petrus missed the 2008 season because of an academic suspension. He returned for an outstanding season in 2009. The former 225-pound walk-on tied a combine record in the 225-pound bench press with 45 repetitions. - Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com/CBS Sports/USA TODAY

03/19/10 - PRO DAY RESULTS: Arkansas OL Mitch Petrus (6-foot-3 1/4, 307 pounds) made a name for himself by tying the record for bench press repetitions at 225 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine. He continued his quest to become drafted at Arkansas’ pro day on March 17, but he chose to stand on his combine bench press record. He did post decent numbers in the other drills, however, running the 40-yard dash in 5.25 and 5.28 seconds, recording a 30-inch vertical jump, an 8-foot, 10-inch broad jump and a 7.79-second three-cone drill. He also did a position workout at the center position (he played guard, tight end and fullback in college) for three NFL offensive line coaches, including Cincinnati’s Paul Alexander and Detroit assistant offensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn. – Gil Brandt, NFL.com

Chris Campbell http://cdsdraft.com/profile.php?id=4131

Overview
Fine small school prospects who has been an integral part of one of the finest FCS offensive lines.

Really stood out during the Texas v. The Nation game.
Strengths
Decent agility for a big man. Carries his weight much better than you might expect at first glance. Gets decent depth on his drops. Uses multiple punches and strong hands to keep pass rushers at bay. OK in the running game as well. Can probably play multiple line positions.
Weaknesses
Not an elite run blocker. Not an elite athlete. May take some work to brush up his technique in pass pro, and may not be quick enough overall to play LOT at the NFL level.
Projection
Priority UDFA who could sneak into the last round or two with a solid pro day workout.

Draft Scout Otis Hudson News
03/10/10 - PRO DAY RESULTS: Eastern Illinois held its pro day on Friday, with 10 teams on hand to get a look at four players run drills indoors on Tartan Turf – except for the short shuttles. Those were run outdoors in 40-degree temperatures. Offensive lineman Otis Hudson (6-4 5/8, 312 pounds) ran 5.17 and 5.24 seconds in the 40-yard dash, had a 26 ½-inch vertical jump, 8-9 broad jump, 4.91 short shuttle, 8.14 three-cone drill, and 21 bench press repetitions. – Gil Brandt, NFL.com

08/03/08 - Three former Big Ten Conference football players were among the 90 arriving Saturday for the opening of Eastern Illinois’ preseason football practices. The newcomers include Otis Hudson, a 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman transferring from Minnesota. A Barrington High School product, Hudson appeared in five games a redshirt freshman for the Golden Gophers in 2006 as a defensive lineman. He started the 2007 season playing four games on defense before moving to the offensive line. As earlier reported, EIU also has added defensive tackle D’Angelo McCray from Illinois and kicker Austin Signor from Iowa. McCray, a 6-4, 333-pound defensive tackle. He redshirted as a member of the Fighting Illini Rose Bowl team last season. He played at Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, Fla., and was rated the 45th-best player in the country by Rivals.com and a second team All-American by USA Today. - Journal-Gazette

Since we apparently just traded away our 5th rounder you might want to change the title.

Veldheer will be gone by the end of the 3rd is my guess......

I like Capers and Petrus.

I also think Tony Washington could be a very nice project to develop. There are character issues that took place as a teenager (look it up you will be a bit grossed out) but if the Skins think that won't be a problem, then he's a possiblity.

http://www.nfldraftbible.com/Players/List/2010-Big-Board/Tony-Washington.html

Skinny: Tony Washington only played two years of football in high school, but was still able to attract interest from Louisiana State. However, grades kept the 6’7” 300 tackle from attending, and he instead attended junior college at Trinity Valley Community college in Athens. There, he was moved from defensive end to left tackle, a move he did not immediately embrace. After transferring to Abilene Christian, Washington has slowly worked his way into NFL Draft discussion as a left tackle, and has been ranked as high as the sixth best senior offensive tackle in the country. Washington admits that he messed up his chance to play Division I football, but says that the situation has made him stronger.

Scout's Take: Some might be surprised to see Washington from Abilene Christian ranked this high, but they won’t be thinking that when April comes around. Washington is a 6-6 300 athletic tackle, who some teams have as high as their number three overall senior tackle in next April’s draft. He does a good job being light on his feet and show good pass blocking blocking skills. The biggest question with Washington is that he plays a lower level of competition and that is what really holds him back from everyone truly believing that he could be a starting tackle in the NFL. The biggest thing that will help Washington draft stock will be the All-Star games when he will be able to show his talent against players from Division one.

Our View: Washington has great size (6’6 ¼, 302), athletic ability, and the body type that scouts look for. Despite a little stiffness, he moves very well, has a presence about him, and is a solid pass blocker, which will make him an ideal left tackle prospect. He earned 1st team All-America honors and LSC Offensive Lineman of the Year plaudits last year for his consistent play. Don’t be surprised if he gets look in the late rounds.
