NFL Fans by County, According to Facebook

I call BS. Not only have the Redskins completely dominated the Hampton Roads market for decades (even with the fake Steelers and Cowpie fans), but the widespread "fandom" of Dallas and Pittsburgh is dramatically overrated. I'd like to see this map after each team has a bad season. Not many other than ours would remain the same.

It's hardly scientific but when I was a kid in Carolina it was hard to NOT find a kid who was a Skins fan. There was that one weird kid who was a Seahawk fan for no good reason, a couple of Cowboy fans and that's about it. I had some family in Western Carolina who followed the Falcons but that was almost forgivable since they were way closer to Atlanta than DC.

Of course when the Panthers came to town team loyalties changed for some folks in Carolina but not everyone. Charlotte is full of people who aren't from Carolina if that makes sense. People in central and eastern Carolina would rather not even consider Charlotte part of the state and some of that feeling carries over to the team. Lots of folks in NC still follow the Skins.

Meanwhile in central VA, I can't remember seeing as many Redskins' jerseys, stickers and hats than I have this year. Winning brings fans out of the woodwork I guess. In years past if I saw someone wearing Skins gear I'd often speak to them. Not in a creepy way but in a "Hey I know the team sucks but I'm glad I'm not alone in following these guys anyway" way.

The number of Steeler fans in this area seem to be way out of wack, or at least it seems that way.

Damn right!

The fact that the data is from Facebook brings up at least one question. Fans of teams who happen to be friends of fans of another team-particularly notable rivals-will, in my observation, go out of their way to troll their friends team posts which may be skewing the results

Keep in mind, this is from data from about 35M people, so only about 1 in 10. Its still the most accurate fan map ever created.

Cool way to map it. The smallish sample size shoudlnt matter too much in terms of representing the overall population. Adding more to the sample wont change much if they were random enough in the selection method (sorry, stats geek who teaches Six Sigma here)

Well, its probably skewed more towards the younger crowd, so under 40? Although older people are getting facebook pages these days, so who knows. But I'd say of the 35M users on facebook, probably close to or even more than 3/4 are under 40.

Sure, it's still a fun exercise. In a big sample like this my personal experience doesn't count for squat.
