The Washington Commanders still need an edge rusher six weeks before training camp. While the Commanders may feel different, preferring to see which players step up this summer, Washington's best pass rusher currently on the roster is linebacker Frankie Luvu.

Luvu is outstanding, but he's also not an every-down pass rusher. Luvu is one of the NFL's best linebackers, and while defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. plans to use him as a pass rusher frequently in 2025, there remains a need to acquire a real difference-maker.

Those types of players aren't available in June. Sure, some veterans can still help, but at this stage of their careers, they are no longer every-down players. There is one player frequently mentioned as a potential Washington target who could still be an option: Cincinnati defensive end Trey Hendrickson.

Hendrickson's situation is complicated. The Bengals gave him permission to seek a trade earlier in the offseason, but were never serious about trading him. After paying wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, Hendrickson's contract remains an issue. He led the NFL in sacks last season and is underpaid compared to other top NFL pass rushers. He has one year remaining on his current deal at around $28 million.

Jeffri Chadiha of NFL.com would like to see Hendrickson traded to Washington:

This situation seems to be worsening by the day, which is a great reason why the Bengals should move Hendrickson before the season. He clearly could supply tremendous value to another team -- since he led the league with 17.5 sacks last year -- and Cincinnati needs to change a downward trajectory after missing the last two postseasons. Washington is a contender that could desperately use the pass-rush help and has the cap space to make this move happen with QB Jayden Daniels on a rookie deal. It’s also apparent Cincy isn't willing to pay Hendrickson what he wants in a hyper-inflated edge rusher market. The Bengals thought they could appease him, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins with new deals when the offseason began. Two out of three ain’t bad.

The Commanders are in a unique position. They can pay Hendrickson at the top of the market, even if they agree to a new long-term deal with star receiver Terry McLaurin. That's the benefit of having a star quarterback on a rookie contract for a few more seasons.

The downside is compensation. Due to the previous regime, Washington general manager Adam Peters was forced to trade multiple draft picks to upgrade the roster around Daniels. The Commanders are already without a pair of draft picks in 2026, including a second-rounder, due to the Laremy Tunsil trade.

It isn't very likely that the Bengals trade Hendrickson. They are notoriously difficult to deal with and quarterback Joe Burrow would be unhappy if Cincinnati parted ways with its best defensive player.
