The New York Giants face an interesting situation entering the 2025 season as the current regime must have a win-now mindset despite coming off a 3-14 campaign.
So many decisions about the future won't be made until the season gets underway and the Giants can look at the direction of the franchise truly. This is especially true when it comes to potential players who may be traded during the upcoming campaign.
Throughout the offseason, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux had been the subject of trade talks since it was reported that the Giants were targeting No. 3 overall pick Abdul Carter.
In a recent article about bold predictions at the NFL trade deadline, Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report has the Giants sending Thibodeaux to the Detroit Lions.
If the Giants are still in the hunt to have a competitive record, it will be interesting to see what path they take. They could hold onto Thibodeaux, considering his fifth-year option for 2026 is already exercised. Or they could look to cash out before giving him a new deal.
A lot of this depends on the development of Carter as well. If the Penn State product bursts onto the scene and commands more snaps each week as the trade deadline approaches, the Giants may want to consider a deal that involves Thibodeaux.
In 2024, Thibodeaux put together a strong campaign despite finishing with only 5.5 sacks. His 42 total pressures were just six fewer than his career-high mark, and he was on pace for 59 total pressures had he played a full season, per Next Gen Stats.
Much of this is speculation at this point in the offseason, but once the season arrives, it will be interesting to see what happens with this narrative.

Still, considering shortcomings elsewhere, trading Thibodeaux to address a larger need would be logical, especially if the team is still alive as the deadline approaches. I get the feeling that will actually be the case, as Russell Wilson could have a redemption season in him thanks in part to the emergence of Malik Nabers.
If that's how things go down, we are again looking at Washington, Green Bay and Detroit. In this case, Thibodeaux is the consolation prize because he's not close to as established as Hendrickson. The Lions have more money to spend than the Commanders and may feel the need to at least outbid them here to keep up with the Joneses in the NFC North.
