The one thing that always plays into sports is the tendency to look at a team and how they performed in the most recent season and assume things will continue as they have been.

That's why so many jaws dropped by halftime of yesterday's game at NO.

A team with a different starting qb, rb, and wrs surprised an opponent that has a decent but not spectacular defense.

Sorry, Prisco the Redskins may not go 14-2 this season but they won't be close to 3-13 either.

Shanahan's deactivation of Grossman should underscore that whatever happens we are not going to go back to where we used to be.

Be careful overreacting to one game :)

I know, I know. Our rookie QB played like a savvy 10 year vet. I know, we put up 40 points for the first time in a long time. I know, 1987 was the last time we threw a 88 yard TD pass.

1987

I was two years old.

Still. It's one game. This is very much a week-to-week league.

I hope they keep predicting us to lose. This is the perfect season to set the bar low.

Saturday night I told my wife that the National press had proclaimed there was no way the Skins would win in New Orleans and usually that means that the Redskins will throw a big monkey wrench into that theory.

And boy did they ever!

Just like a few months ago, surfing the web, opposing fans typing things such as "gimmick college QB" or the most popular "Yeah, they got RG3 but he has no one to throw to..."
Maybe they learned something yesterday? Nahhhhhhh...lol

One of the most satisfying things about yesterday's win is watching and listening to all the sports pundits backpeddle today.

Life is good. :)

So, does anyone really think the Prisco prediction had any legs?

Three wins? We managed that with Norv in 1994 with a god awful team of older players and other teams' castoffs.

As bad as things were last season the Redskins won 5 games with Beck and Grossman along for the ride.

My point here is not to tout the Redskins as SB contenders, merely to note that its a fool's errand to try and predict how players are going to perform when you have never seen them together before.

With all of the offensive turnover here in Washington (as opposed to NY or Philly where key players return) no one knew what to expect.

Yes. It has legs.

I don't think 3 wins is the cap. But I'm not going to overreact to one game.

If the team that played from 1pm est to 4:45 pm est yesterday shows up every sunday for the next 16 games then we're not going to lose more than 6 games all year.

But if the redskins have taught me anything in 20 years it's that they are anything but consistent, and can always be disappointing.

The redskins of old blows out NO when they aren't supposed to, then gets blown out by the Rams the following week when they aren't supposed to.

Lets see if that changes.

One game doesn't change any of that. So 3 wins certainly has legs. I don't buy it, but I was thinking 10-6 before the game started (i have proof!). But 3 wins has as much legitimacy as 10 wins in my opinion.

One week at a time.

I don't think 3 wins is realistic based on that performance, but I'm not going to go crazy. Let's be honest, the Saints defense stinks. Its not the worst unit in the league, but its pretty dang bad. I will wait until they play a better unit before going bananas. :)

The saints also had a QB that held out, and a coaching staff thats been suspended since May.

I'm not trying to **** on anyone's parade, but we should be realistic about what we've done here. It's completely possible the Saints are a 3 win team. Then this win doesn't look so good...

Sorry T, 3 wins for the Saints is not possible. When you have a franchise QB as they do, with the offense they have, 6-7 wins is your basement, imo. I think at worst they will be 7-9 this year. We beat a middle of the pack defense, and a top 5 offense. Certainly something to get excited about.

I expected these excuses out of the media, not a somewhat knowledgeable fan of our team giving it the "Saints lost the game" spin. You're discounting what the Skins worked extremely hard to accomplish. It's not like the Saints had a major turn over of personal, or change in their system. They have been running this system for a long time now, and Brees has it down to second nature.

RE - Goaldege and Mike:
You need to understand the difference between me saying something is possible, and that someone else's opinion is as valid as ours, and me voicing what my actual opinion is. To be completely fair it's really hard to tell the exact meaning of one's thoughts through text, and the way I type/word things certainly doesn't help.

I think the team is going to win 10 games. So, I don't think it's possible we only win 2 out of our next 15.

I think the Saints are going to compete for a division or at least a wildcard. So no, I don't think they're going to suck.

But I can't find fault in a person who thinks we're going to have a losing record. We've been a DREADFUL TEAM FOR 20 YEARS and we've been clamoring about how this time it's different EVERY year. Not all of us every year, but a significantly large section of the fan base.

It's not the big bad media out to get the redskins. It's not a vast conspiracy between the NFL, Talking Heads, and Newspaper Reporters to take away our cap space, reinstate saints players the day before, make us open up against the giants on the road every year, have the bye week too early, consistently rank us at the bottom of power rankings ever week, and write about how we're going to only win 4 games, or 3 games, or 0 games, or 6 games.

It's not a conspiracy.

It's people not wanting to stick their necks out for a team taht has SUCKED for 20 years.
SUCKED
We've been DREADFUL.

So pardon me if I'm not going to crucify someone for not being big on the skins when year after year after year after year, going on well before most of these people had their current position, the redskins have (at the end of the season) sucked.

:)

I think they're going to win 10 games. I picked that before the saints game even started.

Where did I say the saints lost the game? I think the 'comeback' was garbage time antics and stat padding that I'm used to seeing the redskins do. That game was never close from the word go. The redskins dominated for 60 minutes. They allowed it to be a bit too close towards the end, but even then I didn't feel it was close.

Let's talk about an interesting stat. About how 4 out of 12 teams that make the playoffs in year X don't make the playoffs in year X + 1.

The NFL is a week to week league. How team A finished in year X has jack all to do with how that team finishes in year X + 1.

Players on holdouts do terrible the next year (typically). Brees may or may not follow that pattern. I don't know, week 1 loss to the redskins isn't going to tell me the answer.

I'm not making excuses. I've been wearing a grin from ear to ear since about 1:30 pm EST yesterday that I can't seem to get rid of. But I've seen too much over the last 20 years to crown our team champs or turn aside the idea that maybe this year the Saints aren't going to be very good, or that week 1 was more of a fluke for the 2012 season for us or them.

edit: not angry. hope it doesn't seem that way. just trying to be clear in what i'm saying (or trying to say) :)

No, you didn't say the Saints lost the game, but the minute you brought up the Brees hold out and suspensions having a bearing on the game, it lends the same tone (spin) we see in the media all the time. Trust me, I've watched the same team during the same period, and there have been many times that sentiment fit. While you are correct in that it's a league of parity, the odds of a perennial winner like the Saints doing so badly is highly unlikely.

As for the stat of playoff teams making it back to back years, it can be looked at from the other side too. Eight out of twelve teams make it. Those arent bad odds to be honest

You have struck me as analytical, using good logic in your posting, so the post struck me as being a bit out of character to be honest. You clarification tells me you saw the same thing I did yesterday, a dominant performance by the Skins.

I'm also not mad, but do come off that way at times. I'm not the most elequant, or skillful at expressing my opinion. Keep smiling...

I listened to a lot of sports talk radio today - I didn't hear a lot of belittling of the Redskins performance - in fact, not sure I heard anything like that. What I heard was almost universal gushing over Griffin's performance, and even grudging respect for what the rest of the team did.

It's a new day gents.

Don't get it twisted - the only reason that game was close was because of Drew Brees - holdout or no. The Saints defense was not particularly good on Sunday - it remains to be seen if that was because of how good RG3 and the offense were, or that they are just a bad defense. I suspect it will be somewhere in the middle (it usually is); RG3 will struggle against better Ds, and similarly pick apart bad Ds.

a few things guys,
1- our defence looked very good early, when we ran that 40 front with the personelle package that should now be our bread and butter (oh god I hope)AND blitzed, it got us great pressure, and covered up the liabilities in our secondary, however when we started playing off man or mid zone in the last 3rd and 4th Q, it exposed some problems, Haslett has always tightened up in the second half and thats cause for concern.

2- the saints D is bad, they were missing their best player and they were obviously not ready to play us, a scheme change does afect a team as anyone here should know lol, that said, RG3 played very well and im hoping he builds on that.

3-our Oline should have gotten better as the game went on, but it seems like we are very up and down there, no consistency and no dominant plays, I honestly think a lot of our success is due to teams overplaying RG3s ability to boot.

I have to agree. I haven't actually caught any of the type of thing I was speaking about. Things like Tom Brady to coming out of nowhere and complement Robert, is about as unusual as as it gets.

Hell, unless DC was to fall off into the ocean, our local sports never mentions the Redskins unless we play the Bucs. Six pm sports actually opened with comments on Robert...

This is going to take a little getting use too...

Understood :)

I just get tired of the 'media is against' us stuff. We've seen it for the last couple of years, like it's supposed to be a shock that someone expects us to suck this year :)

No one will, and honestly I don't think anyone should, respect us until we win the division in a convincing way.

I look around the NFL from Sunday and see teams like Buffalo, Tennessee, Arizona, Cleveland, Miami, etc. that have very limited talent.

The Saints are going to win their share of games this season just as Green Bay and the Giants will.

The Redskins are a mid-tier team right now. They are in that 7-9 to 9-7 range with injuries and the bounce of the ball helping to determine the finish.

Yes, the Saints qb came in late and was a bit rusty early but then again the Redskins played 3 quarters of the game without the #1 receiver and the entire game without the #1 strong safety.

Anyone who saw Madieu Williams out there knows the Saints were targeting his matchups.

I am really enjoying this win and I am really enjoying the fact that of all the rookie QBs, ours was the one that shined. I think that's awesome and I hope it keeps going.

However, we won our opener last year against the Giants in pretty dominating fashion. We started the season 3-1. We won our opener against the Cowboys the year before and started the season 2-2.

September is not our problem. October and November are. Let's see where we are after week 12 and then we'll know just how far around that corner we've turned.
