Steelers Biography

Lou Spanos is in his 16th season with the Steelers and his 15th year as a assistant linebacker coach. He is one of only three assistant coaches to be on the Super Bowl XXX, Super Bowl XL and Super Bowl XLIII coaching staffs, joining defensive line coach John Mitchell and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau.

As a defensive assistant, Spanos assists the linebackers and the defensive coaching staff with game preparation, video analysis and scouting of Steelers’ opponents.

A 1994 graduate ofTulsa, he was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at offensive center. Spanos stayed at Tulsa for a year after his playing career concluded to assist coaching the linebackers. He then joined the Steelers as an intern in the scouting department. After his one-year internship, Spanos was promoted to his current position of defensive assistant.

Spanos and his wife Timme reside in Pittsburgh with their two sons, Zachary (9) and Caleb (6), and daughter Gabriella (4).

The Steelers have lost another assistant from their coaching staff and could be in danger of losing one more.

Lou Spanos, a defensive assistant for the past 15 seasons, has agreed to become the linebackers coach for the Washington Redskins under new Coach Mike Shanahan. The Redskins have hired former Steelers defensive coordinator Jim Haslett to install the 3-4 defense in Washington.

Spanos and Haslett worked together on the Steelers' defensive staff in the late 90s, until Haslett got the Saints' head coaching job. Some pretty nasty defenses those Steelers had.

This would appear to lend some credibility to the rumors of a switch to the 3-4 as that is what the Steelers have run during Spanos' entire tenure there. Appearances can be deceiving, of course.

I don't care if it's 4-3...3-4...4-6...or 7-11.

As long as it is an aggressive, attacking defense.

He must have gotten quite a pay raise to leave Pittsburgh after all this time.

Welcome to the party, pal!

If these reports are true about a change in defensive as well as offensive scheme, then give Shanahan credit for being willing to take a wrecking ball to this thing and REALLY start over.

I wonder if we are now going to see a purge similar to the one Jimmy Johnson pulled off in Dallas.

I am with you, if we really are going 3-4 then the entire team is getting a big fat wrecking ball, which means 2-3 years of "true" rebuilding.
