The Redskins resume practice with a two-hour session starting at 1 p.m. ET. The media can watch the first half hour and then that’s it -- we’re now into regular-season mode in terms of rules and structure. There’s an open locker room for the media from 11:15-noon. Here are three areas to monitor:

3. The backup running back battle. Evan Royster and Silas Redd are ahead of Lache Seastrunk at this point. It will be curious to talk to Gruden about this as well -- what he’s looking for and what he’s seen. Redd has done a solid job in protection, but he hasn’t exactly been tested a whole lot. Still, he’s passed thus far.

Wonder if they let Redd get on the field with the big boys to see how he stacks up.

Im interested to see how Redd pans out. I thought we got him for a good value but if he ends up being a contributor, it could be the first move we look at and REALLY see this team taking a turn in the right direction as far as personnel goes. Thus far the rookies have appeared to be solid picks with Grant and Redd looking like awesome late round/UDFA choices.

The guy looks incredible to me. I haven't seen a Redskins RB pop off the tv screen like that in a long time.

Seastrunk playing in the fourth quarter last game was probably a sign too.

yeah, terrible thing a man crush is
too many choices.............ain't it great?

is Redd really going to beat out Seastrunk?

I didnt even see Redd in the game against the Browns..

Well, barring injury that would determine otherwise, I say it's Morris, Helu, Royster, Young, and Thompson.

Both Redd and Seastrunk to the PS.

If anyone becomes a candidate for the PUP list, it will be easier to keep who we want, and stash the other on the PS.

Thompson is hurt... again. Is he eligible for the PS this year? I've heard raving about Redd and very little positive ANYTHING about Thompson.. I might be off the pulse here but I'm not so sure Thompson is worth a roster spot.

The local media folk have repeatedly said how much the staff like Thompson. They also acknowledge that he has to get on the field. Of a healthy Thompson, Redd, or Seastrunk, I think Thompson would be snatched off of waivers before either Redd or Seastrunk. As of now, anyway.

Does his play seem that much more effective? Or is it because he's not a rookie? It must just be me, but I just feel the eyeball test has seen a higher grade from Redd... I could be wrong?

Zero chance of Thompson being on the roster. He was badly injured in college, and can't seem to stay healthy here. We have too many other very good and healthy options to even consider it.

If he's incredibly lucky, he may end up on the PS. If not, he's audtioning for another team this weekend.

I changed your quote up by putting in Hankerson and removing "in college" and it fits. Its a good problem we have here in Skins land right now...I think that Bruce should be getting some credit for that.

Chris Thompson's situation is interesting. The coaches do like what he offers when healthy (speed, hands) and have said so repeatedly, problem is he continues to have a difficult time staying on the field. He is still listed third on the latest depth chart (argue if you wish the veracity of those). He is back on the practice field today but is not expected to play against the Ravens. That tells me one of two things: either he has made the 53 or had a spot reserved on the PS, or he is crazy. If he has not been informed of the team's plan for him and is not doing whatever needs to be done to compete for a job this week, he must have a job lined up selling Chevy's in Tallahassee.

I haven't seen this many QUALITY players in our camp in a long time. It's difficult to judge sometimes, cause they're playing in preseason games and mostly against backups, but it really does seem like we have more good folks to choose from this year. Yes, a tip of the hat to our organization on that one.

As for the backs.....it's a very tough call, particularly with Thompson sitting. Clearly, Morris, Helu and Young aren't going anywhere. After that, it's tough. I really like Redd, having seen him play at USC.....and with Seastrunk, I kinda feel like you don't find that kind of speed that often....you don't wanna jettison him too quickly. For me, Royster and Thompson are a little interchangeable. I find myself pulling for Thompson more than Royster, but then Royster gets in the game and pulls off a good play or two. Thing is, I feel like he's plateaued....and we ARE looking to improve, right? I say you keep Thompson over Royster....and then, if you can, you hold onto both Redd and Seastrunk.....whether on the 53 or on the practice squad. Though morbid, I almost wish one of those two would come up with some mysterious injury that would allow us to go IR rather than PS...but, that's probably not gonna happen.

Question.....of the RB's looking for a gig, which of them play good on special teams? That could/should play into the decision. Anybody know?

I hate to keep repeating myself, but Royster has started in this league. He's had a couple 100-yard games as a starter.

That's going to trump anything some late-round or no-round pick does against backups in the third quarter of some pre-season game. Helu and Royster are Seastrunk and Redd with experience. They will have to suck to be unseated. Thompson can't stay on the field. If he doesn't do something soon I can't imagine him making the team.
