Looking for occasional and healthier alternatives to alcohol and stumbled upon Kava. Going to try some this weekend for the first time. Anyone had any experience with it?

I haven't myself but I know my Aunt has; when she gets back in town from vacation(She's in Greece right now), I'll ask her about it. Supposed to be back in the morning.

Where you at Goaldeje? This stuff would be right up your alley :)

So - I bought some Fijian Kava powder online. This morning, on an empty stomach, mixed up a 'medium' batch (based on what I've read), about 3 tablespoons and put it in a mesh bag. You have to submerse it in about a cup of water and knead it for about 10 minutes to get the active ingredients into solution. I ended up with about a cup and 1/2 of liquid to which I added a couple splashes of coconut/almond milk. Kava is not known for it's taste, but honestly it was not unpleasant, it did taste a little bit like muddy water.

One of the 'tests' for good Kava is that it should cause some tingling/numbness of your tongue and throat and I felt that immediately. It's not intense like you'd get with an allergic reaction where your throat is closing up, just a mild numb sensation that lasts for a bit. I also, much to my surprise, got a 'buzz' feeling almost immediately. Not 'euphoria', but just a nice steady buzz which I am still feeling about 20 minutes after drinking it. Kava supposedly has 'reverse tolerance' effects in some people where it takes multiple ingestions to feel anything. Not me - I definitely feel it.

So far, this is really nice. I could see this becoming part of my routine as it's got few side effects (as long as you don't over-indulge) and because of the reverse tolerance quality, you don't have to increase your intake over time to get the same effects.

Will follow-up in awhile with a complete after action report, but so far liking it a lot.

So - I drank the Kava and as described, fairly noticeable 'buzz' for may 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Never got any more intense, just a pleasant semi-euphoria like maybe what you'd feel like after a single beer. Drank a second portion a few hours later and same thing, no more or less. I did get a headache but pretty sure that was the result of it being almost 3pm and not having eaten anything since the night before. Went away after I'd eaten something.

I would definitely drink Kava again. Pretty easy to prepare once you know the routine, and could see it being an occasional substitute for alcohol, especially when I'm just looking to relax a bit. I also bought some drops that have concentrated Kava you can just add to a beverage. Will give that a try soon too.

Sorry for the delay in answering haha but my Aunt says it is helping her and deffo recommends.

I'm not sure if it's today's news, or the 2nd big serving of Kava, but I am sky high tonight :wings:
