Game Notes: Washington Redskins vs. San Diego Chargers

• After a goal line stand at the end of regulation, the Washington Redskins earned a 30-24 overtime victory against the San Diego Chargers in front of an announced crowd of 80,115 people at FedExField on Sunday.
• The Redskins are now 24-14-1 all-time in games decided in overtime. The overtime game was the team’s first since a 31-28 victory against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14 last season.
• Fullback Darrel Young tied a team record and set a career high with three rushing touchdowns, including a walk-off four-yard touchdown run in overtime.
• Young’s three touchdowns were his first touchdowns of the season. Young entered the day with one career rushing touchdown, scored on Dec. 18, 2011 against the New York Giants.
• Including Young’s performance on Sunday and Roy Helu, Jr.’s three-rushing-touchdown game vs. Chicago in Week 7, the Redskins have had two different players record three rushing touchdowns in a game in the same season for the first time since 1983 (John Riggins in Weeks 6 and 12, Reggie Evans vs. Detroit in Week 8).
• Wide receiver Pierre Garçon caught seven passes for a career-high 172 yards. Garçon’s 172 yards were the most by a Redskin since Santana Moss’ 178-yard effort at Detroit on Sept. 27, 2009.
• Garçon’s 100-yard receiving game was the 10th of his career and his fourth since joining the Redskins prior to the 2012 season.
• The victory gave Executive Vice President/Head Coach Mike Shanahan his 178th career victory as a head coach, including postseason games.
• Shanahan earned his 170th career regular season victory as a head coach.
• Washington compiled 500 total yards for the first time this season and for the 12th time since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. The 500-yard game was the Redskins’ first since a 511-yard performance at San Francisco on Dec. 26, 2009.
• The Redskins rushed for 209 yards, their third 200-yard rushing game of the season. Washington’s seven 200-yard rushing games since 2012 are the most in the NFL and three more than any other NFL team as of the conclusion of Sunday’s 1 p.m. games.
• Running back Alfred Morris posted season highs in rushing attempts (25) and rushing yards (121).
• The Redskins are now 10-1 in games in which Morris records 20 or more rushing attempts, dating back to Morris’ rookie season last year.
• Morris eclipsed 100 rushing yards for the ninth time in his career, tying Ladell Betts for ninth-most in team history.
• Tight end Jordan Reed caught four passes for 55 yards. Reed’s four catches give him 38 on the season, setting the Redskins record for receptions by a rookie tight end, held previously by Stephen Alexander (37 in 1998) and Chris Cooley (37 in 2004).
• Reed registered his first career rushing attempt in the first quarter, gaining 18 yards on the carry.
• Quarterback Robert Griffin III completed 23-of-32 passes for 291 yards and one interception. His 71.9 percent completion percentage was a season high.
• Griffin III was not sacked during the game, marking the first time the Redskins had held an opponent without a sack since Dec. 3, 2012 against the New York Giants.
• In the second quarter, cornerback E.J. Biggers registered the fourth interception of his career and his first as a Redskin.
• The interception pushed the Redskins’ takeaway streak to 12 consecutive regular season games, matching the team’s longest streak since Weeks 14-17 of the 1999 season through Weeks 1-8 of the 2000 season.
• The pick gives Washington an interception in six straight games, the first time the team has done so since intercepting at least one pass in eight straight games from Week 17 of the 2011 season through Weeks 1-7 of the 2012 season.
• On the ensuing possession after Biggers’ interception, Morris rushed for the 18th touchdown on his career and his fifth of the season on a five-yard run. It marked the first time this season Morris had scored a touchdown in consecutive games.
• Wide receiver Santana Moss recorded the 700th reception of his career in the third quarter. He became the ninth active player to reach the milestone, joining Tony Gonzalez, Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson, Jason Witten, Wes Welker, Anquan Boldin, Steve Smith and Larry Fitzgerald.
• The reception was also the 549th of Moss’ tenure with the Redskins, tying him with Gary Clark for third-most in team history.
• Moss rushed for 18 yards on a carry in the third quarter. The 18-yard run was Moss’ longest since registering a 27-yard run on Sept. 14, 2008 vs. New Orleans.
• In the fourth quarter, cornerback David Amerson registered his second interception of the season and his first since Week 4.
• Linebacker London Fletcher played in his 248th consecutive regular season game, extending his record for the most by a defensive player since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
• Fletcher started his 207th consecutive regular season game, second-most by an NFL linebacker all-time (Derrick Brooks, 208).
• Running back Roy Helu, Jr. had a season-long 21-yard run in the second quarter.
• Wide receiver Leonard Hankerson gained 55 yards on a season-high-tying five receptions.
• Linebacker Rob Jackson recorded his second sack of the season in the fourth quarter.
• The Redskins were 12-of-17 on third downs. The team’s 12 third down conversions and 70.6 percent conversion rate were its highest since converting 13 third downs (72.2 percent) vs. Seattle on October 2, 2005.
• Washington possessed the ball for 40:03 of game time, the team’s longest time of possession since Nov. 11, 2010 at Tennessee (40:09).
• The Redskins’ 13 rushing first downs tied a season high set in a Week 7 win vs. Chicago.
• Five different Redskins (Morris, Helu, Jr., Reed, Moss and Griffin III) all registered one rushing attempt of at least 10 yards in a single game for the first time in records available back to 1994.
• The Redskins pushed their NFL-best home sellout streak to 381 games, including both regular season and postseason games.
• Sunday’s game was the culmination of the team’s annual Homecoming Weekend. Not including staff and coaches, former players in attendance at various events this weekend accounted for more than 600 seasons of Redskins service, 98 Super Bowl appearances and 56 Super Bowl wins. The team welcomed back 32 of the 80 Greatest Redskins, 19 Ring of Fame members and six Pro Football Hall of Famers as part of the celebration.
• The Redskins evened their home record at 2-2 this season.
• The Redskins pushed their all-time record against the Chargers to 7-3. Washington is now 5-1 in home games against San Diego all-time.
• The win snapped a three-game losing streak to San Diego and gave Washington its first win against the Chargers since Dec. 6, 1998.
• The Redskins are 2-1 against the AFC West this season.
• The Redskins won despite trailing at halftime, 14-7. It was the Redskins’ second win of the season when trailing after two quarters, joining the team’s 24-14 win at Oakland in Week 4 (trailed 14-10 at halftime).

The Redskins rushed for 209 yards, their third 200-yard rushing game of the season. Washington’s seven 200-yard rushing games since 2012 are the most in the NFL and three more than any other NFL team as of the conclusion of Sunday’s 1 p.m. games.

The locals are also touting a stat of 200 yards in both rushing and passing in a game, the Skins have 3, the rest of the teams in the NFL have a combined total of 3.

(whoopee!)
