Forbes - Redskins Fall To 8th Most Valuable Sports Franchise

Value actually increased for the Washington Redskins in 2012, going from $1.56 billion to $1.6 billion. It was not enough to keep from slipping down the rankings though. Washington comes in at 8th place, down from 5th. Ahead of them:
#7 - Los Angeles Dodgers, $1.615 billion
#6 - New England Patriots, $1.635 billion
#5 - Dallas Cowboys, $2.1 billion
#4 - New York Yankees, $2.3 billion
#3 - Barcelona, $2.6 billion
#2 - Manchester United, $3.165 billion
#1 - Real Madrid, $3.3 billion

You can view the whole list, starting with the Washington Redskins, here:

I have a feeling we'll be climbing back up the list in the near future.

:)

Pretty remarkable when you think about it though. This is a team that's been mostly down for 20 years and that supposedly has a name that's offending many... Okay, Mike Wise and three other columnists.

To maintain top ten status is a testament to the stubbornness loyalty and passion of us fans.

Start collecting on those super-bowls and watch our value climb higher and higher.

how's the value calculated?

I wish they'd tell us that, I always found that interesting. At the end of the day the value is what someone is willing to pay for it and nothing more, but you need someone buying it to know that :)

I imagine it's some combination of ticket sales/attendance, merchandise sales, and advertisement revenue.

They also factor in things like the facilities, I believe. In the case of the Skins, the team owns it's own stadium which is not the case in all NFL cities.

Actually I don't think the skins own it, I'm pretty sure PG County does and the skins just lease it. I believe there's 14 years left on the lease.

Otherwise, yeah their facilities would factor in.

I'll take 8th in the world (or worse) over last in the division each and every year. :D

The Dodgers? REALLY? Must be all that money out in LA-LA LAND. :yawnee:

Wait, didn't the dodgers recently file bankruptcy? Something to do with McCourt and finances...they stripped him of ownership I thought?

i thought that was all over a messy divorce though, not the actual value of the team?

I agree with those who are impressed we've maintained our status in the top 10 despite such crappy record stats these past 2 decades. Even though we fell in the ranking, we actually increased our worth, which is incredible. Whatever the ranking case may be, I pledge to continue to do my part in helping the team's profits by buying a sinful number of Redskins jerseys.

Sorry everyone, I'm revealing my completely unfounded bias against a sport here, but it's sad to see soccer raking in such huge profits. Can't believe there are so many people in this world who love that sport, lol. Ok, anti-soccer rant over.

McCourt did it after the league blocked a huge television deal he had negotiated. In the league's defense, McCourt probably would have used some of the money to fund his ridiculously expensive divorce instead of settling financial obligations and righting the sinking financial ship that was the Dodgers (due to a plethora of idiotic financial decisions made on his part). Anyway, Magic Johnson's group bought the team last year for something like 2 billion, I believe. Since the bankruptcy was settled last year I'm pretty sure that wasn't a factor in this current Forbes ranking.

Regardless, GO DODGERS!!! haha

Gotchya...I didn't follow the story very closely, just bits and pieces. :)

Amen! And welcome to the site

If you get a chance, head over to the Introductions thread and tell us a little about yourself. If you need any help navigating the site (or otherwise) just let us know. Again, Welcome!

Yeah, well, the only reason I kept up on it was because I'm kind of a diehard Dodgers fan :D

Anyway, that's not important. What's important is watching our beloved team's net worth skyrocket this next decade as RGIII leads us, injury-free, to the top! :D

You know what one glaringly obvious thing is about this list though? We managed to gain our position in the top 10 among teams who have nation wide/worldwide broadcasting on a very regular basis, and have for decades. We have never had that. So we've accomplished all of this in a much smaller reach than every other team in the top 10.

The county owns the land IIRC and the stadium is owned by the team.

This. JKC built the stadium with money out of his own pocket.

Like it or not, it is the sport of the world. As such, the big European clubs how a leg up on any team from a US sport as soccer's global appeal means that they will sell logo'd gear the world over while most US sports franchises have to settle for the bulk of their sales being US based. Shoot, I have friends here in TX who own as much Man U gear as they do Cowboys gear and a buddy who is a Skins fan but owns more Arsenal gear. I myself was considering a Tottenham jersey for the upcoming EPL season until they changed kit sponsors (I refuse to wear anything with the HP logo on it).

In the face of that, American football can only really be king of North America and our most profitable franchises will always lag behind orgs like Man U and Real Madrid.

That doesn't even make sense to me. How do you build a huge structure on land you don't own? What happens when the lease for the land is up and they move? Are they going to tear down their stadium? Can they rent/lease the stadium for events when they don't own the land they're on? Will PG county force them to pay taxes on the structure they can't do anything with? If they lose rights to the land do they lose rights to the structure?

Seriously how does that work...
