So that makes Torain the starter, which is great, I am pleased.

But who backs him up?

Rumor is the team may sign Williams back. He was expected to be signed back to the practice squad anyway but this might put him back on the 53 man roster. It makes sense as he knows the playbook well.

I'm going back again, with great confusion to the Chad Simpson move. I just really do not understand that whole move. Any chance he is the one cut to make room for Williams? Or could we actually go with Simpson?

Gold, cutting Simpson almost makes the most sense. He doesn't know the system yet. If you keep Simpson then you have to decide whether to put Portis on IR. If you don't go that route, do you bring back Williams or do you sign a veteran for a few weeks? I doubt Larry Johnson or Willie Parker would be willing to fill in for 4-6 week so it would end up being a guy who doesn't know the system.

If you keep Simpson and bring back Williams or another guy, Devin Thomas could be the odd man out. If that happened, you can bet a team we play this year will sign him.

Shanahan would definitely have to look carefully at any move he makes.

Good points. When the Chad Simpson move was made I'm sure Shanny wasn't thinking about CPort being lost for the season. But we almost have to strongly consider putting him on IR, don't we? Which would leave us with Torain and Sellars onthe active squad. Torain is a bit of an injury risk too, couldn't stay healthy when he was with Denver. Makes me a little nervous.

I have been pining for a youth movement, and now that I have it, I'm nervous. Go figure. :)

Man, this is turning into an interesting situation.

I've got one tab open to this thread and a tab open on that Packers site discussing almost the same thing with Ryan Grant being out for the season-mostly arguing about whether or not Ted Thompson should've been willing to give up some picks to try to get Lynch before Seattle grabbed him.

No accounting for taste I guess-I don't know who gets more frustrated quicker fans of a team trying to get to the Super Bowl or fans of a team trying to get to 8-8 or maybe 9-7.

This was inevitable for Portis eventually-the guy has simply taken a beating on the field for a long time and he's getting to the age where, no matter what shape you're in, your body just can't keep recovering back to near-or-at it's previous condition. Maybe after this injury we may be able to use him, sparingly, perhaps situationally. It's a shame that it's occurring just when he's made an apparent turnaround both physically and mentally as far as his game goes. I do see this as probably his last season as an NFL RB however.

Hope you get better soon CP, and when you do have to hang it up-well, thanks for what you've done.

In the meantime, Torain, here's your chance-you've looked good so far-show us that's just a taste and you've got even more in the tank and we'll love ya for it.

O.K., Shanny, do your "who the hell is that RB that nobody's heard of makin' all that yardage" trick-the audience is waiting.
