Training camp must be right around the corner, because Terry McLaurin struck at the Commanders on Tuesday.
Terry has been very durable, dependable, and reliable during his six seasons with the Redskins and Commanders. It had been reported over the last few weeks that Terry was frustrated. If you had any doubt about those reports, McLaurin certainly removed all doubt Tuesday.
We love Terry; we love his effort, leadership, and energy. We love his speed; we love his ability to catch balls in traffic and snatch away contested receptions from defenders. McLaurin caught 13 touchdown passes this season. We want him back; we want him to continue being the stand-up leader, the mature veteran example, Mr. Commander.
If you listened closely, Terry told us what this is about in these contract negotiations. Terry became passionate when bringing up his age, didn't he? McLaurin will turn 30 in September. There is now no doubt that the subject of his age and how that relates to a long-term deal is at the heart of this disagreement in the negotiations. Terry had his age facts lined up and recited, ready to go. I was left wondering, how many times must Terry have been telling himself that he is in his own mind a unique 30-year-old?
McLaurin told us repeatedly he is frustrated, confused, and disappointed in the Commanders. The former Ohio State Buckeye receiver, drafted by the Redskins in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft, painted a picture, desiring his hearers to understand his message, that the problem in this situation is actually very simple. McLaurin told us he realizes it is a business, but then turned right around and painted a picture that he is being low-balled, that the Commanders are not making him a fair offer.
A "fair" offer? What is fair? Well, that is relative, isn't it? It is neither clear nor obvious. After Tuesday's press conference, McLaurin has convinced most of the fan base that GM Adam Peters is really in the wrong here. However, until we understand some of the terms, we have absolutely no idea. Terry might feel that Peters is not being fair, and Peters might not be. However, because McLaurin "feels" Peters is not being fair, it does not mean Peters is actually being unfair. That's the difficulty and complexity of feelings. Human feelings can be so heavy within us, so emotional, so deep, yet that is all they still are: feelings. Just because you "feel" something, does not mean it is actual reality.
Until we hear from Peters and learn the terms of these negotiations, we should not accept as absolute truth the first side of the story we hear. It's so true. A wise man hears both sides of a matter, rather than being naive and simply taking one side before wondering what the other side of the story might be.
Perhaps the Commanders have offered Terry a two-year extension, which would take him through the 2027 season, when he will be 33 years old. Perhaps McLaurin wants a three-year extension? We just don't know at this point. Or perhaps it is about how much money McLaurin thinks he is worth. One would think the Commanders are certainly offering McLaurin a raise, but how much of a raise? McLaurin certainly acted like he thinks the Commanders have disrespected him with their offer. Perhaps they have disrespected McLaurin.
Again, until we know actual numbers, actual years, we simply don't know.
What we do know is the ball is now in the Commanders' court. How will they respond?
