Some of the NFL stars of tomorrow will hear their names called at the National Mall in 2027.

Washington will host the 2027 NFL Draft, President Donald Trump said Monday in an Oval Office news conference where he was flanked by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell.

The decision is a major coup for the city, expected to draw up to 1 million people to the nation’s capital as the city embarks on an expensive embrace of professional football by redeveloping the former RFK Stadium into a new home for the Commanders by the end of the decade.

“The draft is a celebration of one of our country’s most cherished cultural institutions, and the annual highlights for football fans everywhere,” Trump told reporters. “Everyone in the world will be watching. We look forward to welcoming people from across the nation, from all over the world.”

The Washington Commanders and city officials in April announced plans to have the football team return to D.C. and build a new 65,000-seat stadium. While the deal still needs approval from the City Council, the stadium would open in 2030.

Trump championed the deal on Truth Social last week, saying it would “boost Economic Development, create more Jobs and, hopefully, lead to less Crime in the area.”

Bowser — whose working relationship with Trump has improved since his first term — backed the event announcement during the conference.

“We believe in investing in sports because they have helped us transform neighborhoods, and the NFL bringing this event to the nation’s capital will help us get hotel rooms, restaurants,” the mayor said. “Americans from all 50 states will come to the nation’s capital and enjoy our beautiful city and museums.”

The news of major investment — in the name of a football stadium and the NFL draft — comes as the district confronts a $1 billion funding shortfall brought on by House Republicans’ March stopgap funding bill. Though the Senate quickly passed a fix, some Congressional Republicans say a bill restoring the District’s ability to spend its own tax revenue doesn’t have the numbers to pass.

The draft is an annual event in which top college players find out where they’ll start their professional careers.

The 2024 Draft in Detroit generated over $200 million in economic impact for the region. And 600,000 attendees came to this April’s draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin — population 107,000 — to witness University of Miami flamethrower Cam Ward join the lowly Tennessee Titans with the first pick.

Trump took a personal interest in this year’s draft, reacting angrily when University of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, was passed over until the fifth round, when he was picked up by the Cleveland Browns.
