There is no comparison with Blough and Gibbs.

When the Redskins hired Gibbs in 1981, he already had 15 years of coaching experience dating back to when Don Coryell hired him at San Diego State in 1964.

Blough has less than 1 year experience as a quarterback coach.
And yet the fan base had no clue who he was and questioned the hire.
JKC wanted to bring George Allen back while Beathard went with an unknown.

There have been lots of hires who fans questioned and may not have even known that didn't work out so well. It's not unreasonable to wonder if a guy with his lack of experience is going to be an upgrade.

I guess I'll be one of the few who likes that they hired a young unknown dude who they believe is going to be a great OC. I wanted Kingsberry gone and this is as good a way as any to get rid of him. I also remember the exact same negatives being said of McVay, and even worse things said about Kyle Shannahan. Hell, maybe 1/2 the fan base was excited when they both left.

Damn, looks like the Lions suckered us into Blough...... I'm not even going to try be hyped about it. Just wait and see what we unveil week 1. Hail!!

Never said it was unreasonable.
But some folks act like this is Dan and Vinny hiring Jim Zorn all over again.

thanks for letting me know. I was trying to see if Blough was part of the Shanahan- It seems like he could be part of an interesting mix.

I'm just as whelmed as anyone else on this hire, but this notion that the Lions suckered the team into promoting from within doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense for any pragmatic reason I can fathom.

I think the Lions were genuinely interested, really wanted him and were close to making an offer or actually made an offer. It just sucks because this accelerated our timeline.

I think everybody is wondering if it'll be an upgrade, there's no way of knowing until we see him in action and see what he's got but the anger and pessimism is a bit over the top especially considering we've gone the retread route more times than we can count and almost never gone with the hot young unproven guy.
The league has changed and now if you want to get the brilliant young guy you gotta snatch him up early and take a chance.
There is almost no doubt we'd have lost him had we not made this move, either to a team this year or next if we went with someone else and then a few years down the road when hes orchestrating a top 5 offense like mcvay, Shanahan, lafleur, McDaniels etc this place would be going nuts saying we always let our talent walk out the door.

Well Quinn didn't want that to happen and now we gotta just wait and hope he was right.

Thoughts after digesting this move overnight:

- McDaniel was really the only experienced guy on the market I was interested in. Every other experienced option came with more red flags than my high school girlfriend.

- With 25% of the league looking for a HC and McDaniel's clear offensive genius, I'll be surprised if he isn't a HC somewhere next season. I just hope it isn't NY.

- If reports are true, Blough was considered a viable OC candidate by more than just the Washington staff. That's a positive.

- No first time OC has play calling experience. Every single great one had a first year - Gibbs, Walsh, Reid, McDaniel, Shannon, etc. And they did it in a day where there was no step between position coach and coordinator.

- Age is just a number except that younger men usually seek to prove themselves while an older man may lean toward being safe.

- There are 2 other experienced play-callers on this staff to help out. It isn't like Blough has been suddenly thrust into a leading roll with nothing but rookies to assist him.

- There is a fair bit of talent on this offense to work with. Blough doesn't have to try to make a Michelin 3 Star meal with ramen, old potatos, and pig ears.

- DQ has seen his fair share of young coaching talent. So has Adam Peters. I trust them more than I trust me when it comes to football decisions.

Having said all that, am I excited? No, not yet. Am I pessimistic? Also no, not yet. If I'm honest, this is the absolute best place I could be right now without the team hiring Mike McDaniel.

The one thing I liked about Snyder (at least pre Bruce Allen) was if he wanted someone, he’d get on Redskins One, fly to his target’s house and not let him leave until he signed a contract to come here.

Given the personal relationship they have with McDaniel, DQ and AP should’ve hustled to Miami and spent Wednesday trying their good friend signed up.

Instead, they got FOMO’d by the Lions into Blough

And what if their "good friend" only wanted a HC job?

It’s hard to believe people still miss Snyder in any capacity.

I’m pretty excited about Blough. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if he is the head coach here in a year or two.

How many times have teams pulled off the Ole Seinfeld roommate switch?

The cowboys did it last year with Schottenheimer so its not unprecedented im trying to think of any other examples.

SHOUT OUT! By FAR and not even close The Best Post in this thread! I've read it over a couple of times. Thank you, Sir for your quality and thought-out perspective! 👊

Like Jay Gruden, this guy played the QB position and took the hits. Jay was a very good OC (Not HC). These guys are better equipped to design a offense than a coach with just passive experience alone. This is ASSUMING he has the smarts and dedication to really digest his opponents strengths and weaknesses rather than a rote script like Kingsbury (who I feel called plays he WANTED to work vs Plays designed to work)

It's true that Gibbs had years of NFL experience to take on the HC job here in DC, we are not hiring Blough to run the entire show.

We are asking him to step up and direct what he has been deeply involved in the past season plus.

So, he has a head start on knowing the players, their strengths/limitations, etc. ENTERING the offseason and not having to wait until OTAs and camp before seeing what he really has to work with.

That can be a big advantage in getting off to a better start to the season when there are changes in the coaching ranks.

Again, I am pleased that Washington did more than go with the rinse, wash and repeat candidate retreads at OC.

We will see that Blough does but hopefully he is more in sync with Quinn and Peters in terms of how we want to see Daniels come along.

He might also be more inclined to go with younger players we draft and sign and be a DEVELOPER rather than a guy strictly looking to rack up stats.
