The 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay reportedly drew over 600,000 people over the three-day event. Next year's draft is set to be held in Pittsburgh, and in 2027 it is to be hosted in Washington D.C.
Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris joined NFL commissioner Roger Goodell at the White House on Monday for a press conference, where Harris boldly predicted attendance to exceed one million people.
"I believe we'll get over a million people," Harris said.
"We believe we'll have well over a million people when we come here," Goodell said.
President Donald Trump formally announced that the draft will be held in Washington in 2027. The current expectation is that the draft ill be held on the National Mall, with the Capitol building serving as a backdrop.
If the D.C. crowd eclipses seven figures, it would shatter the event record, set last year in Detroit when over 750,000 people came to watch the newest class of NFL rookies be selected.
Trump's announcement came with Goodell, Harris and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser beside him in the Oval Office.
The city and the team recently announced an agreement to build a new stadium for the Commanders at the RFK Stadium site, just two miles away from the Capitol. Both sides are hopeful a new stadium will attract more than just Commanders games; with a potential Super Bowl bid in the back of their minds.
It's the second time in a week that Goodell has been featured in a major announcement for the district. The news conference last week announced the deal between the city and the team for nearly $4 billion. That deal is still pending D.C. Council approval, however.
For now though, the trio will celebrate hosting the draft in D.C.
"The draft is a celebration of one of our most cherished cultural institutions," President Trump said. "Everyone in the world is going to be watching."
"The draft has become one of the great entertainment sports events," Goodell said. "We can have a tremendous impact on this community, and it will not just be an event, it will show the world how far the nation's capital has come and where it's going."
