Dan Quinn needs a break.

On Thursday, while talking with the press at the conclusion of the Commanders' mandatory minicamp (June 10-12), Quinn was asked what he would do until training camp began.

"I need to recharge too," Quinn responded with no hesitation. "As coaches our times together are pretty intense."

It's true that since the 2024 season ended with the Eagles' loss in the NFC Championship game in Philadelphia, the coaches have been immediately involved in deciding about their own free agents, which free agents to pursue, the annual NFL Combine, the annual NFL draft, three phases of the offseason program, and most recently, the minicamp.

So, now is the time for coaches like Dan Quinn to take a couple of weeks off, take a vacation, and spend some time with their wives and children. These are parts of life that should not be ignored. Yes, coaching in the NFL is important. It's a good-paying job as well.

But is it really to be compared to marriage? How can one value spending time with one's children or grandchildren? These guys have lives; they have families. They need the break; they need time away from the job and with their families.

"The offseason is a really busy time for coaches from the teaching standpoint," elaborated Quinn. "So we pushed ourselves to see if we could elevate to help the players elevate. I think it is wrong to ask them (players) to get better and we (coaches) stay the same. We would short-change them."

But Quinn was acknowledging the old wise principle from the ancient book of Ecclesiastes, "There is a time and a place for everything." In the case of an NFL coach, a time to work really hard and a time to get away, recharge and spend time with the most important people in your life.

Quinn spoke of being away and getting charged up, saying, "Yes, those times in between are important for me."
