The Commanders are expecting big things again from linebacker Bobby Wagner.
This week during the OTA workouts, linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. was asked about the veteran Wagner. It's no secret that Wagner will turn 35 later in June. Norton spoke of how Wagner is not only a dependable starter but also a dependable teammate and captain who is always encouraging and mentoring younger players.
"He (Wagner) is a really special person, on and off the field, mentally and physically," began Norton. "He has a really high level of consistency. It matters to him being really good, being the best. Once he got to that high level, he has done a great job of sustaining it/maintaining it."
Last year, the Commanders' coaches were hopeful Wagner could be a great help to rookie linebacker draft choice Jordan Magee from Temple. The 2024 fourth-round choice, however, was plagued by injuries, appearing in only eight games, mostly on special teams.
This season, the Commanders again drafted a linebacker. This time, it was UCLA's Kain Medrano. "Kain has been amazing; he's always been really smart," expressed Norton. He's always been really fast, a good pro. His ability to work with other people, learn and diagnose plays, and use his speed and put it on the field. It's really been good to see him as a pro. It's great to see his development."
Considering Washington's lack of linebacker depth, the Commanders hope Magee takes the next step forward in his development.
