Commanders' Terry McLaurin Words Must Be Met With Action originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The first day of Washington Commanders training camp is in the books, and as expected, veteran receiver Terry McLaurin was a no-show.
Seeking a new contract and expressing his frustration at how things have been handled this offseason, it isn't a great start for a franchise that will depend on him heavily in 2025 to get to the playoffs.
These things take time, but now that training camp is here, McLaurin is missing out on valuable reps, and given the NFL landscape, the Commanders and Terry can't afford a slow start.
With head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters addressing the media to open camp, Peters made it clear the franchise will do what it can to get a deal done.
“Without a doubt I think everybody in this building values Terry very much,” Peters said. “We knew that coming in and we knew that even more after spending a year with him. In terms of where we're at, we've had you know conversations recently and we'll look to have some more conversations and we're going to do everything we can in order to get a deal done.”
Ok, so there's the talk.
But we want action.
The Commanders already know the ballpark in which the McLaurin deal will land, with the consensus being that talks would begin at $30 million APY. That is fair, from our viewpoint, given what McLaurin has done for the organization, even in its darkest days; he remained professional.
There isn't too much doubt that a deal won't get done, but the longer this lingers, the more uncomfortable it gets.
Peters says he will do everything he can to get a deal done. Well, it's put up or shut up time.
No words, just actions. Get it done.
