So, you're a rookie, and it's your first full day of training camp with the Washington Commanders. What are you trying to accomplish?
Former Virginia Tech wide receiver Jaylin Lane was drafted in the fourth round (128) of April's NFL draft, and displayed he knows he has much to learn in the NFL about being a wide receiver. Immediately after practice, some media members caught up with Lane, asking for his first impressions of training camp.
Lane initially spoke of just being here, training in Ashburn, which is a blessing due to veterans like Noah Brown and Michael Gallup. "It's a blessing for me, a rookie coming here, being able to take bits and pieces from everybody's game and learn the most I can."
Gallup, a veteran of six NFL seasons (2018-23) and 86 regular-season games, caught the attention of Lane. Lane pointed out that Gallup, since arriving, has "put his head down and learned the playbook." The veteran impressed Lane with his route running, Wednesday as well.
"This felt great man, it's a blessing to be out here," expressed Lane. "I never take a day like this for granted. I am just trying to get one percent better every day." Wednesday was a very nice day with low humidity. "This is amazing weather. I'm going to enjoy it every time we get weather like this."
When asked what he is attempting to improve from his days at receiver at Virginia Tech, Lane responded, "I'm just trying to be as crisp as possible in and out of routes. The crisper you are, the better timing with the quarterback. That's what I'm trying to be consistent, crisp and an elite route runner.
How about his new quarterback, Jayden Daniels? What has made an impression on Lane in the offseason program and on the first full day of training camp? "He's a real cool guy, really down to earth. But he's a worker. First in every day, he's going to put in the work, as you can see. He's real consistent as well in everything he does, is what I have noticed."
Returning punts at Virginia Tech has led many to hope that Lane can win the job here for the Commanders. Lane responded that he is now just trying to focus on the role they give him for this team, whatever that might be. Lane actually mentioned returning punts and being the gunner on kick coverage teams if that is what he is called upon to do.
"Earn respect, help us win, earn trust," is how Lane summarized his role at the beginning of the 2025 training camp.
Receivers Olamide Zaccheaus, Dyami Brown, Jamison Crowder, and Brycen Tremayne did not return to the Commanders this season. Consequently, there are several new receivers in camp vying for these roster spots.
