Big things are expected from Washington Commanders rookie cornerback Trey Amos. Through five practices, Amos is probably among the most-discussed players — not just rookies — in training camp. Washington had a first-round grade on the former Alabama and Ole Miss cornerback in April's NFL draft, but he fell into their laps at No. 61 overall, and the Commanders couldn't have been any happier.

Those who have attended training camp they've mentioned Amos' name. He's long and athletic. He doesn't look like a rookie. He plays with the confidence of a veteran.

"I like going against everybody, man," Amos said last week after a practice. "It's like being in love with the game," Amos told reporters. "I just love guarding any receiver, any day. This is a me vs. me. You know, the dog mentality. Just going hard every day, no matter who's in front of me."

On Monday, Amos met with the media after practice and showed there's a real maturity to go with that confidence.

“I feel like just trying to get comfortable early and understanding the defense, getting to know my players, getting to know my coaches, and just trusting them and trying to gain respect," he said. "I feel like that's, that's the type of mindset I've been having. Day by day and just earning respect each and every day. On the field and off the field.”

That's the type of attitude that will endear him to his coaches and teammates. Everyone loves confident players, especially young ones, but sometimes that confidence masks something else. There are none of those concerns with Amos.

“The expectations for right now, for training camp, are just go out there, compete, get better each and every day," Amos continued. "Just trying to maximize everything. Building chemistry, just being with your teammates each and every day."

General manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn have been intentional in bringing in talented players, who will also fit the culture they established in 2024. Amos, like several of Washington's other young players, is a perfect fit.

Amos has a real shot at being one of the Commanders' starting cornerbacks in Week 1, alongside Marshon Lattimore and Mike Sainristil. His progression throughout the remainder of training camp will be fun to witness.
