Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019
Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope you had a good weekend. Hello to everyone on social media. We'd love to have you as a member here and become part of the family.
OTAs, mini-camp, rookie camp, and the draft have passed into the history books. Training camp will be here on Thursday and the first preseason game is just over two weeks away. We'll continue to cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.
BBQ continues our off-season evaluations and today we will take a look at the safeties. Feel free to scroll back in this off-season blog and see what we have said about free agency, the draft, and take a look at what your fellow Redskins fans think of the team transactions over the last several months. BBQ will conclude the evaluations tomorrow with a look at special teams. Feel free to offer your own analysis as we go along.
- Days until Training Camp: 3
- Days until the first preseason game: 17
- Days until the Regular Season Opener (Eagles): 48
- Days until the Cowboys game: 55
- Days until the Giants game: 69
Let's get right to it!
Safeties:
Landon Collins
It seems like a reality beyond imagining. Landon Collins in a Redskins uniform. It didn't seem possible a year ago, but here we are and one of the best safeties in pro football is wearing the burgundy and gold. Collins will play mostly in the box and will swing to free safety on occasion. He can play both positions effectively. Arguably the best strong safety in the NFL today, but he will see time in a strike safety role as well – in fact, quite often. Collins is a candidate for All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.
Montae Nicholson
This is the year for Montae Nicholson to take the next step and secure his spot as a starting free safety. He had a promising first season, but his struggles in year two were obvious – including injury and personal issues. The hope is that having Collins next to him and a solid core of teammates will help Nicholson to mature and accelerate his game to the next level.
Deshazor Everett
Deshazor Everett is an absolute stud on special teams and provides quality minutes in relief as a strong safety. The hardest hitting defender on the team. Everett may not garner headlines around the league, but his role is vital to the success of the team.
Troy Apke
It's now or never. Is his job on the line? Will he be cut this summer? Troy Apke was listed as a seventh round prospect by BBQ last year and the Redskins astonishingly took him in the fourth round. Was that a mistake? He can prove the front office right or wrong in the coming weeks.
Others
JoJo McIntosh could push Troy Apke for a roster spot, but he probably is a practice squad candidate for now. UDFA Deion Harris could see some reps at free safety and cornerback, but he is not a candidate for the roster of fifty-three and may or may not be practice squad material. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie could spend some time at free safety, especially if Montae Nicholson struggles.
There is our latest look at roster position evaluations for this off-season. Tomorrow we will wrap up the summer evaluations with a look at special teams.
