Long story short ...

Chat Room activity levels last evening overloaded our bandwidth limits and the hosts shut us down. Trying to get them to get us back online is not unlike trying to get the Fed to agree on a budget deal.

The Chat Rooms are temporarily down, but we are working on getting them back online as well. Will advise on that as soon as possible.

Again, apologies, and our word we are doing all in our power to ensure this doesn't happen again.

I admit to a little withdrawal this morning, but I made it through. thanks for all the hard works gents.

No big deal - things happen. Thanks for all of the hard work that you and the admins put into it each day.

I do have a minor suggestion for when things like this happen again. Would it be possible to just post a tweet from the BGO account informing whats going on? I wasnt sure if the error I was getting was from something on my end or if the site was down.

Just a thought and again, thanks for all the awesome work you guys do for us.

Great idea, Snyder. Should have thought of that this time and we will remember that going forward. Thanks for the suggestion.

The issue wasn't with the monthly allotment--we rarely dent that--but with real time demand on the server with the chatroom buzzing. We normally have a script in place to handle that, but the script was temporarily down.

Ah, I understand. That makes much more sense then. I thought you hit some monthly limit in bandwidth and they just shut you off.

Now you that you say that, I think we've had this conversation before... my memory isn't very good ;)

An IT guy with bad memory?

Not good my friend.

Not good at all. ;)

It is much more common than you might think. Trust me.

It's not good, you're right. It's taken a few years to get to the point where it doesn't matter anymore.

I have to write down almost everything. If it's not in my calendar, notes, or tasks list it'll get forgotten about. :)

I have no clue what that means :whoknows:

Yall better get it fixed before we get to the Super Bowl this year or next!! :)

It's ok, I just figured I was banned...

I thought I got the ban hammer then I realized this isn't that other site where we have balls big enough to be men about things :p

so the site itself doesn't have load balancers?

403 error message cued in that this was a server problem but not a loading issue.

denial of service anyone?

renegotiate your service level agreement!!!

It's a bit more complex than that, Al. I'm not sure a higher SLA would have resolved this one.

Neo -> I know there are technical issues. Just saying if you can contractually manage some service guarantees...all the better! like everything, of course, this gets to be a cost-benefit decision.

anywho.....kudos to whomever had to spend their night/day getting the vendor to troubleshoot and the BGO admin team itself.

cloud brother...go to the cloud!!!! try an IaaS solution that gives you max control while retaining quick provisioning/reconstitution capability worst case.

Sorry for the down time again. Apparently We got overrun by Bing and Google bots, to the point we exceeded our bandwidth allotment and got us temporarily shut down. The good folks at Hostgator are not able to tell exactly what attracted the swarm, but they have offered some friendly tips for "slowing them down" that we'll be sure to follow.

Meanwhile, please wash your dishes after eating. And no more spent Captain Morgan's bottles and Kit Kat wrappers under the couch.

Fricken' bugs.
